It seems that Pipex was being coy after all. Just one month after the ISPs MD Mike Reed said me that ADSL2+ wasnt a priority, he appears to have changed his mind.
60 BT exchanges are now to be wired up to provide speeds of up to 24Mbps to cheer P2P sorry, Internet Enthusiasts. We have selected those exchanges where we have at least 400 customers within 5 kilometres of our core network, providing payback within 24 months, Pipex said in a statement. Early 2006 is expected to be the go live timescale.







At this stage it is unclear how an ADSL2+ service will effect the rest of the companys other packages (apart from make them cheaper, obviously). Specific details about this should roll out around Chrimbo time.

So its clear the race for that third place is heating up. Newbie Be Unlimited grabbed gold, by launching its service on 31 August, just two days before UK Online. Bulldog was expected to grab bronze, but as we know its being having its fair share of problems lately. As a result popular all in one HomeChoice looks set to pip it, but neither announcing actual dates, Pipex may just be a long shot.

Personally speaking, I like to think it was my more-is-more speech that I gave to Mike at Craven Cottage that did the trick Just call me Gordon Gekko ;)

Lifeboat charity seeks to raise profile through the internet

ADVERTISEMENTThe Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is overhauling its web site so that it can increase donations and recruit further volunteers.

The organisation has signed a deal with ISP Pipex to host the new system, which is intended to go live in November.

The charity aims to increase the sites visitors and donations fivefold by introducing ecommerce functions and real-time information about rescues.

As a charity, we rely on voluntary donations online and through people buying things from the shop, said Steve Burns, web team leader at RNLI. We need to find ways to attract more people to the web site by adding new functionality. We also want to encourage them to donate or get involved.

One new application will be the out on a shout facility, which will allow people who are considering volunteering as a lifesaver to see where lifeboats are conducting rescue missions.

People will be able to see when a lifeboat has been called out; get information about the latest rescues; shop, donate and find out about the history of the organisation, said Burns.

RNLI will use four virtual local area networks protected by Cisco firewalls to run the system. The key thing with the Pipex system is that its dedicated, stable, resilient and secure, said Burns.

The web portal will also provide secure access for the RNLIs 4,500 volunteer crew members, so that they can access training modules and information over the internet.

The charity is also planning to make considerable savings on hosting and domain name costs. The plan is to consolidate local web sites, run by many of its 223 lifeboat stations around the UK, on to the www.rnli.org.uk site.

It will be a lot easier to manage and it will be a lot more cost-effective, said Burns. The plan is to amalgamate all of this into the main web site and then to introduce a new content management system.

Pipex will host the system from its London data centre at Harbour Exchange, which has strong business continuity systems in place to ensure that the portal does not fail.

BE offers surfers new opportunities with 24 meg broadband

LONDON - Broadband ISP Be is to launch a super-fast 24 meg service, which it claims is the first in the UK.

The ISP said that one 24 meg line will be able to offer two streamed high definition TV channels, as well as three or four standard TV or video-on-demand channels with enough bandwidth left for general surfing and internet voice calls.

The move comes as BT announced the creation of its new access services business OpenReach, which provides equal wholesale access to all service providers, including BT's own retail division.

Ofcom believes the setup will lead to lower prices and broader choice for consumers.

It follows the move by BT last May to dropped its wholesale prices, which allowed ISPs to offer more aggressive pricing and packages.

Be is the first of a clutch of ISPs angling to offer competitive packages and comes after Pipex's announcement at the start of September that it will soon offer punters 24 meg broadband as part of the ISP's investment in local loop unbundling.

Rival Easynet's UK Online planned to launch its 24 meg service at the start of October and Bulldog recently unveiled its 20 meg service.

The Be service will offer its members 24-hour access for 24 a month.

Dana Pressman, managing director at Be, said: "This radically enhanced capability will change the way that people use their computers and opens up a world of opportunities as exciting as the advent of broadband itself."

To sign up customers need a BT line connected to an exchange in which Be has installed its equipment.

SEO is a little volatile at present but good long term prospects, PDX has fantastic future but i'm in COH for the long term, 5 years could be 12p if they progress as they have been, currently 1.4p to buy (10 bagger in five years)...
