Morning Spacie. Glad you're feeling better. In that case might I borrow the nurses for a bit please?

Morning - anyone know what butane gas is used for? We had a small canister dumped out the back and have brought it into the garden purely to stop the local yobs getting hold of it and trying to set fire to it or lubbing it through someone's window - thing is what to do with it now?
Got it in the shade in the back garden but not terribly happy about it....

Thanks JS, you are welcome to the nurses if you can find them, they never arrived here ;-)
bunny, butane used for lots of things, its pretty safe if its in an original canister, its used for cooking etc and also for sniffing !! If its was dumped it probably either stolen or empty !!

Bunny
To test if it has some gas in it I suggest you open the valve and light a match.

Ok so if we keep it in the shade it's not going to blow up then hopefully!
It feels empty or close to it, I'm basing that on the fact I can lift it pretty easily.
So we don't need to get hold of the fire prevention officer or anything, just leave it in the shade and maybe number 1 son can take it to the dump on weekend?
(He's got wheels, I haven't you see...)

If it's empty you can still sell it for 5-10, if it's full (doubtful) more... When you first buy a piece of equipment that uses one, you need to pay the company that makes them a non-returnable deposit of 50 or so, so they have a value.

Didn't think of anything like that Kayak to be honest, I was just really worried the bloody thing could explode if left in the sun - I take it that worry is unfounded...

I meant the 7 or 15kg ones BTW, not the very small ones.

Typical eh Spacie... ah well, I'll just carry on dreaming of nurses instead ;-)
Bunny, as Spacie says, it's probably empty. Don't try using it instead of propane as the jets, etc. are different. Best bet is to ring up the local gas depot and ask them to collect it. Their name should be printed on the cannister, as technically it's still their property. Either that or drop it round to them. It's perfectly safe, provided you don't do anything stupid like opening the valve when you're having a fag, and even then you'd have to be very unlucky.
Don't take it round the Dump, and no it won't explode until it gets ver, very hot and even then it'll have a lead plug that should melt first and release the gas in a controlled fashion.

bunny it will be fine in the shade, if its a heavy steel canister it does not even need to be in the shade.
Is it one of the camping gas type canisters? if its got any gas in it you will be able to hear it or feel it slosh around if you shake it.
There may well be something printed on the canister about dosposal or even a number for advise.

Good morning everyone,
Spaceman, I was waiting for your response about the nurses. Does anyone want the sat nav they were using to find your place?
Stockbunny, look in your garden for the campers, they might have taken up squatters' rights in your garden.
