It's generally a bullish indicator, as would be the price itself crossing above and holding above a long term moving average. The 20 day MA naturally follows the price more closely than a 200 day MA. How you would look at it depends on the situation. It might be more relevant if a share that's been in a clear downtrend shows this, as it might be the early signs of a long term trend change. It might be less relevant in a share that's been in a directionless range over a long period, as these will tend to cross above and below averages quite frequently.

There is no easy answer - from my own point of view, TA is a useful tool and not the be all and end all that some would have you believe - enter Limpy stage right.

I find the death cross a more useful indicator.

In essence, in answer to your question - it depends on your definition of 'usual'.

Looks like momentum as bottomed out on chart for RR. Rolls Royce so perhphs more to come.
