New Scientist Magazine? (TECH)

Gausie - 23 Jan 2003 02:38

New Scientist magazine has for many years run stories on a wide range of new technologies, examining the scientific aspects to these technologies, and the commercial opportunities that they present.

What catches my eye is that they currently seem to be quite early in reporting innovations by young UK small cap companies - often they get wind of where things are heading before the stockmarket even begins to understand the issues.

This post is not intended as a subscription drive for a magazine - far from it. What I'm interested in finding out is whether any other posters take in industry or academic journals specifically to look for investment ideas.

I'm also keen to discuss some of the new technologies as they are featured in New Scientist or other leading and popular science journals.

What a pair of rampers we have here! :-)

Andy - 26 Jan 2003 00:05 - 20 of 32

Croc,

You're right, more ramps than a multi storey, LOL!

Fancy promoting a magazine on here!

BTW, who publishes it?
Should we be buying shares in the publisher?
what's the level 2 look like?

My best regards to Maria please,

Andy.

Gausie,

Is your boiler pressure tested ?
It seems to be building up quite a head of steam :-)

REGARDS THE HOOT..........

Gausie - 30 Jan 2003 12:38 - 25 of 32

Hmmm....

Excelent feature article. The technology sure impressed the science journalists that saw it in operation. And these are guys who see new inventions every day of the week, every week of the year.

Both fascinating to read and serendipitous that they should run this feature so shortly after we started to discuss the magazine.

Will wonders never cease?

Gausie

HOOT
Seeing your name brought fond memories of a time when even nutters like me could make piles of cash very easily (I take it you are the same HOOT back from the good old e-trade days)
anyway, good to see you back (and what happened to Nik?)

THE COUNT--->GAUSIE

I have been an avid reader of New Scientist magazine for over 5 years now.

It is very interesting on its own merits and can get a little too technical for the non scientists among us, but given the tech/biotech stocks that I play/have played with in the past, I find it helps to give me a good general grounding in much of the science involved.

The problem is that they take up a lot of room to store if you have subscribed for a few years.

Clear out the contact notes and that should help:)

The mission of the IRCs is to support innovation and transnational technological co-operation in Europe with a range of specialised business support services. IRC services are primarily targeted at technology-oriented small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), but are also available to large companies, research institutes, universities, technology centres and innovation agencies.

The first Innovation Relay Centres were established in 1995 with the support of the European Commission. The aim was to create a pan-European platform to stimulate transnational technology transfer and promote innovation services.

Over the past five years the IRCs - working together in close co-operation - have been of assistance in over 5,000 technology transfer negotiations, and have helped 65,000 client companies to meet their technology needs and to exploit their research results.

IRC staff (a total of nearly 1,000) are experienced specialists with backgrounds in business, industry and research. To date, they have facilitated 800 transnational transfers of technology - signed agreements for the sale, licensing, distribution or joint development of new technologies.

Today, 68 regional IRCs span 30 countries - all the EU Member States, the newly associated countries (Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia), Iceland, Israel, Norway and Switzerland.

Most IRCs are operated by a consortia of qualified regional organisations such as Chambers of Commerce, Regional Development Agencies and university Technology Centres. Altogether, almost 250 partner organisations are involved, ensuring wide geographic coverage.
