Piling into Van Elle? (VANL)

Martini - 16 Nov 2016 20:25

">Chart.aspx?Provider=EODIntra&Code=VANL&S

Listed on the AIM Market on the 28th Of October 2016

The company is into infrastructure work for roads and railways.

It crossed my radar when a my builder asked me if I had heard of them, as he had had a conversation with a third party saying they were going places. (he does not do shares so was not ramping it to me)

I did some research and thought "Well the government are into infrastructure spending so maybe worth a punt."

This is hardly sexy stuff, pushing Piles into the ground, but I dipped my bread at 101 and expected to regret this impulse buy. However so far there appears to be others thinking the same. Not on the radar of the various BBs that I can find so other than my builder not being talked up. (Till now by me.)

Proceed with caution

Read this on the weekend. A very similar company to Keller Construction.

We round-up the Sunday newspaper share tips. This week, Midas looks at newly floated Van Elle while The Sunday Times highlights wine retailer Majestic.

FINANCIAL MAIL ON SUNDAY - MIDAS
Last week’s shock victory for Donald Trump in the US Presidential election is likely to fuel market volatility over the coming months, particularly when combined with persistent concerns about the impact of Brexit on UK businesses.
But Van Elle should deliver strong growth, despite political and economic uncertainty. The company is a highly successful, hard-working British business, specialising in ground engineering services that make it safer and easier to build railways, roads, houses and a range of other buildings.

Investors advised to keep calm in wake of Trump victory:...

A private business for 32 years, Van Elle listed on AIM on October 26 at 100p. The shares are now 101p and should make strong progress over the next few years.
Van Elle was founded in 1984 by Mike Ellis, a structural engineer by background. In 1986, his first engineering employee was Jon Fenton, a former member of staff at Norwich City Council. Keen for a new challenge, Fenton joined Ellis’s fledgling business working from a tiny office above a stable in Derbyshire.
In 2011, Ellis, then in his late 60s, handed over the day-to-day running of the firm to Fenton and today, Ellis is non-executive chairman and Fenton is chief executive.
Having operated successfully as a private business for more than 30 years, the decision to float was not made easily. However, the group is keen to expand and being listed provides extra credibility with customers and potential acquisition targets.
Ellis also wanted to sell some shares, though he and his family retain 20 per cent of the business, while Fenton is the biggest individual shareholder with a 7 per cent stake.

Turnover and profits are expected to grow by more than 10 per cent in the year to April 2017, with double-digit growth likely to continue in the subsequent years as well.
There will be a small dividend next year, Van Elle’s first as a public company, but payouts should rise steadily thereafter.
Midas verdict: Van Elle is a strong, well run business with a reputation for getting the job done quickly, effectively and efficiently. The shares are a buy.

Thanks for that dreamcatcher explains the current buying.

Aristo - 07 Dec 2016 18:01 - 4 of 95

I bought a few just after the listing, a friend of mine used to work for them and said they were a sound company and indeed appear to be so.
Let's see where it goes if anywhere.

Standard of ramping has gone through the floor over the last 5 years or so.

How I long for a Tadpole/Just Group/MMD/Meldex thread to come along again ... I even miss Nord Anglia even though no one ever ramped it.

Not even an oily penguin spotted off the Falklands for years ... them were the days :-)
