I know a little bit about drilling but a little knowledge is dangerous so I talked to a couple of drilling superitendents who I have worked for.

My question was would a company carrry out side wall coring and conventional coring unless they had good evidence of hydrocarbons?

The response was that all information on formations can be got from electric logs(wireline). However cores are needed to appraise permeability (ability of fluid to flow through rock) and internal structure of the formation. So if a company spent money on both types of core then that's a pretty good indication that they have HC.

Let's hope that is the case.
