I was reliably informed the other day by a couple of PhD students that you now have to ask about someone else's 'partner'. That way you don't get yourself into a tricky situation making assumptions! 'Wife' seems to be in a minority now.

According to today's Telegraph the terms "husband" and "wife" could be abolished from English law if homosexual marriage is made legal. The words would be scrapped and replaced by the neutral term "parties to marriage". I had better start practicing for when I introduce my wife er, sorry, party to marriage!
