IQE - Silicon is the future (IQE)

Master RSI - 03 Feb 2003 11:56

IQE is the leading global outsource supplier of customized epitaxial wafers to the semiconductor industry.

Their technology is of most advanced like AFM means Atomic Force Microscopy and moves a minuscule cantilever over an objects surface, a sharp tip passes over dips or rises punched in the surface and reads out digital information. This technology is not going to slow down it is going to speed up and has to replace most existing forms of memory storage by virtue of capacity and size.

The future of nano-technology, these tiny/minute robots would need very small processors and most sure strained silicon could provide these.

The low share price is due to uncertainty as to when the cash will run out, but I don't think this will happen as cash is of 12 to 15M and NAV of 30p, and losses are going to drop on the next 3 month and we could have profits on the Q4 2004.

Latest news from the Chairman were" The Group remains confident that it is in a strong position within the outsourcing market, although the protection of its cash position is paramount.
With a broad product portfolio allowing the customer base to use IQE as a 'one stop shop', a large available production capacity and a strong balance sheet, the Board believes the Group will benefit strongly as the overall semiconductor industry recovers and will continue to strengthen its position as the leading outsource supplier of advanced wafer products to the sector. "

Nearly all the recent results have been encouraging. Q4 accounts are being completed (30th Dec 2002). IQE know where they stand, if things had got worse their would have been a trading statement by now, and with Amberwave (IQE's partner) increasing its Asian presence, this is a bullish trend and a good point to pick up the shares @ 4.25p

Intel and IQE present joint paper on device tec...
8 December 2010
Intel Corporation and IQE this week presented a joint paper on the development
of InGaAs Quantum Well Field Effect Transistors (QWFETs) for low power logic
applications. The paper was presented by Dr. Marko Radosavljevic from Intel
Corporation at the International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM) held in San
Francisco, CA. The paper detailed work carried out by scientists at Intel's
Technology and Manufacturing Group in Oregon and IQE's epitaxial growth facility
in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
The paper, entitled: "Non-Planar, Multi-Gate InGaAs Quantum Well Field Effect
Transistors with High-K Gate Dielectric and Ultra-Scaled Gate-to-Drain/Gate-to-
Source Separation for Low Power Logic Applications," reports for the first time,
the results of work on InGaAs QWFETs with high-K gate dielectric and ultra-
scaled gate-to-drain and gate-to-source separations (L(SIDE)) of 5nm.

The QWFET devices fabricated by Intel using epitaxial wafers produced by IQE,
show improved enhancement-mode threshold voltage (V(T)) and significantly
improved electrostatics. The results of this work demonstrate that non-planar,
multi-gate device architecture is an effective way to improve the scalability of
III-V QWFETs for low power logic applications.

The IEDM has for almost sixty years been the world's main forum for reporting
breakthroughs in technology, design, manufacturing, physics and the modelling of
semiconductors and other electronic devices. Proceedings of the conference will
be published by the IEEE.

No price movement as yet,but a good deal of buying.

The investments referred to in this article may not be suitable for all investors, and if in doubt, an investor should seek advice from a qualified investment adviser.

How high a share rating should you engage, when economies and markets remain vulnerable to shocks and further recession?

The AIM-listed shares in IQE (IQE), a specialist microchip developer, are a case in point.

This company had a splendid 2010 and is well positioned to sustain momentum as a result of its advanced wafer products linked to fast-growing sectors, especially wireless mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs. Another leg to the growth story is the fourth generation of cellular wireless, enabling comprehensive and secure mobile broadband for smartphones and laptops.

IQE's year-end update, issued 20 January, cites second-half 2010 revenues are likely to be over 17% higher, with full-year sales growth over 36% to at least 71.7 million. This distinguishes the company from most others that have improved profit by cost cutting yet now face quite a challenge to grow the top line.

I have also previously drawn attention to IQE's operational gearing which enhances the shares' attraction when the sales trend is up.

Last July, with the share price at 22p, I noted how first-half 2010 operating profit had risen nearly 180% in context of revenue up over 50%, and argued for "an attractive risk/reward profile here: market leading technology in a decent spread of new product applications and a profit growth trend firming up attractively...".

With the price now in a low-50p region, it sets the forward price-earnings multiple around 30 times, assuming the consensus city forecast (published in Company REFS) for about 6 million pre-tax profit in 2010 and 9 million in 2011.

This equates to earnings per share of about 1.2p and 1.7p respectively. However, the latest update cites the prospect of 2010 operating profit rising over 56% to at least 12.6 million, ahead of the 11.9 million consensus on this score.

Such momentum, prompting upgrades, is an encouraging sign given the scope for IQE's technology in substantial new markets. Scarcity value also contributes to the shares' premium rating.

IQE continues to support TriQuint Semiconductor in new US government contract for GaN based materials
Cardiff, UK - 27 January 2011: IQE announces that its manufacturing facility in Somerset, New Jersey will support TriQuint Semiconductor with a range of GaN based wafer products following its recent award of a US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) contract.

TriQuint has been awarded the Defense Production Act Title III gallium nitride (GaN) manufacturing development contract, the overall goal of which is to increase yields, lower costs of high power, high frequency 100mm Gallium Nitride wafers and improve time-to-market cycles for defense and commercial GaN integrated circuits.

Gallium nitride is a key process technology that is leading advanced semiconductor amplifier design for high-end radio-frequency (RF) communications applications. The material system has inherent advantages over other technologies including high voltage operation, greater power density (more power per square millimeter) and efficiency. The on-going development of GaN-based devices is leading to new smaller, more efficient amplifiers aimed at reducing system size, weight and power consumption.

Mr Alex Ceruzzi, VP and General Manager of IQE's New Jersey facility commented:

"IQE is proud of its close working relationship with TriQuint Semiconductor in supplying reliable, high-quality products ranging from high volume GaAs based RF materials to emerging technologies such as 100mm GaN epitaxial wafers. We appreciate TriQuint's continued commitment in selecting IQE to support this key programme."

TriQuint is a leading global provider of innovative RF solutions and foundry services for the world's leading communications, defense and aerospace companies and has more than 25 years' experience in successfully transferring new technologies into volume manufacturing processes. The Company supplies RF innovation for consumer retail products including mobile devices, wireless LAN, triple-play CATV systems, optical network and wireless infrastructure applications

IQE manufactures a range of advanced semiconductor materials and has closely supported TriQuint with a number of products including GaN for a number of years.

The programme is expected to conclude in 2013 and is divided into three phases with specific goals and assessment criteria at each milestone. The overall aim of the new contract is to demonstrate integrated device technology that meets stringent goals in terms of performance, cost and capacity, and whilst the initial work will be designed for defense applications, it is anticipated that the technologies will eventually migrate to future generations of consumer and communications devices.

I guess the directors selling a few didn't help either.
There must be a support level about here.
