halifax - 16 Feb 2012 17:27 - 2765 of 5505

cynic do you honestly think a major oil company is going to spend billions buying into GKP when Iraq may disintegrate into civil war at any moment?

niceonecyril - 16 Feb 2012 21:05 - 2766 of 5505

£3.86p at close in the USA.

cynic - 17 Feb 2012 07:23 - 2767 of 5505

hali - the oil majors are already piling back into southern iraq, though it gets little publicity ..... if gkp has indeed made a mega discovery, then the long term risk/reward could (not would) certainly make the company a very tasty morsel at a risk-adjusted price

Balerboy - 17 Feb 2012 09:06 - 2768 of 5505

By Ben Lando of Iraq Oil Report
Published February 17, 2012 Iraq is looking to enlist private companies to build four new refineries with the combined ability to process 740,000 barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil, which would help Iraq fulfill its dreams of becoming a net fuels exporter.

Kurdistan Oil Rush: Total 06:51 01-02-2012

By:Decan Dana

With the ushering of global oil giant, ExxonMobil, to Kurdistan to begin oil exploration, everyone had their doubts to whether problems would arise that could jeopardize their entrance into the Kurdish oil arena caused mainly by Baghdad. With hiccups along the way, the deal went through relatively peacefully thus opening Kurdish oil to potential ‘Big Oil’ firms to work within the boundaries of Iraqi Kurdistan.

Months after this deal went through, and to that Exxon slowly setting up shop in Erbil, major petroleum companies have taken a keen eye to what Kurdistan has to offer. Former BP CEO, Tony Hayward, stating that Kurdistan is, "the last big onshore easy oil province available for exploration by private companies." Statements such as that can only induce petroleum companies to get their hands on the oil as soon as possible. Within the last week, it has come to be known that Total, a French major oil company, has also set their sights on Kurdistan and are in discussion with the KRG to finalize a contact to explore within the Kurdistan region, although the contents of the deal have yet to be announced to the public. Rumors are also spreading that the KRG has been in contact with Chevron and ConocoPhillips, just two more major international oil companies.

These deals are certainly a good indication that Kurdish oil and gas are potentially lucrative, enough so that the major oil companies are willing to go head-to-head in Kurdistan to obtain as much land for exploration as they can. With statistics showing Kurdistan to hold 45 billion barrels of oil and an estimated gas reservoir of around 3-6 trillion cubic feet, according to the KRG minister of Natural Resources Dr. Ashti Hawramy, Kurdistan can be ranked in the top 10 oil countries with it being placed in 9th position just behind Libya while ahead of Nigeria. Statistics like these do not go unnoticed to Big Oil companies, Total being the next in line to reap what Kurdistan can offer.

With more information set to be announced in the coming weeks on Total’s contracts with the KRG, one can only look forward to the possibilities of their emergence into Kurdistan. With Total close to a deal, is the possibility of Chevron and ConocoPhillips introduction into the Kurdish petroleum arena set to arrive soon? So far it is only rumors and speculations but what is clear is that their intentions in playing a role in Kurdistan are apparent. With Baghdad taking a sideline in Kurdish oil affairs, for now, the path is open.
