Ubisense group (UBI )

dreamcatcher - 23 Dec 2012 13:57

Ubisense was founded on the notion that computers monitoring or controlling anything in the real world need to be able to sense the environment they operate in – commonly referred to as “sentient computing”.

As humans we make sense of our surroundings using sight and sound. These tools help us understand the identification, location and motion of things so we can interpret the world around us. Without this information even basic actions are impaired and complex activities are beyond reach. Automatic monitoring and the control of processes need a similar level of situational awareness, which is where real-time location system (RTLS) technology can help.

When Ubisense was formed, the objective was clear: to create the very best RTLS available. We knew that delivering customer value would depend on a system that could provide very accurate location data (1m or better accuracy), in very difficult environments (such as manufacturing facilities and warehouses), with high reliability.

Our technology of choice was ultra wideband (UWB), the only wireless solution capable of simultaneously meeting all of these needs. Today, the Ubisense UWB RTLS is unique, employing both time-of-arrival and angle-of-arrival measurements to deliver the absolute best in accuracy and reliability.

Yet identifying, locating and monitoring the motion of important items does not immediately guarantee value. So Ubisense developed specific software solutions to turn RTLS data into high worth, actionable business intelligence. Over the years the company has continued to develop applications in close consultation with strategic customers that lead their respective fields. The result is a suite of location-based solutions optimized to provide unprecedented visibility and control over complex processes.

“Location-based visibility and control” is most often thought of in terms of processes like manufacturing or transit yard management, where layers of complexity exist because of the number of moving objects in a confined area. However, even fixed objects can be difficult to manage when they are very widely dispersed, for example across a telecommunication or power distribution network. Partly through acquisition, and partly through internal development, Ubisense also offers geospatial solutions to solve problems for this class of customer.

Armed with a technology portfolio that can transform the management of assets and processes, fixed or mobile, Ubisense has grown into a leading location solutions company, serving customers such as BMW, Airbus, Aston Martin, Caterpillar, Metro Transit, US Army, Duke Energy and Deutsche Telekom as well as other FTSE 100 and Fortune 500 companies.

Year End Trading Update

Cambridge, UK - Ubisense Group plc ("Ubisense" or the "Company") (LSE:UBI), a market leader in location based smart technology, provides an update on trading performance for the full year to 31 December 2012.

The Group has displayed good momentum in the second half of the period but timing of some projects has led to revenue growth below market expectations and profitability in line with consensus expectations for the full year.

The Geospatial business is expected to deliver revenues slightly below the previous year but with increasing software sales, including promising early sales progress with the MyWorld product, resulting in improved margins.

In RTLS, the business continued to exhibit robust double-digit percentage revenue growth to help drive the Group's overall performance. The momentum in the second half was characterised by an increase in the scope and size of contracts, including production acceptance by Daimler. In addition, new installations were completed at BMW, BAE Systems, Hyundai, Lufthansa and US Steel.

The performance in RTLS was aided by the strategic partnership with Atlas Copco which has driven significant sales growth and introduced a number of high quality manufacturers to Ubisense's technology including Audi, John Deere and Smart.

Innovation remains critical to Ubisense's long-term future with the Group continuing to invest in next generation products and applications extending the Smart Factory Solution Suite.

The Group hadnet cash at 31 December 2012 of £2.6million. Ubisense continues to evaluate acquisition opportunities to supplement the RTLS business and further accelerate growth.

Richard Green, Chief Executive Officer, commented:

"We are pleased with the progress seen in the second half which will allow the Group to deliver a robust performance for the full year. Momentum within RTLS continues which is reflected in our strong pipeline and order book. We remain confident about capitalising on the substantial opportunities we see in high value manufacturing in order to continue to drive growth for the Group."

Off-road vehicle manufacturer contracts Ubisense to drive productivity

Ubisense Group plc ("Ubisense" or the "Company") (AIM: UBI), a leader in real-time location intelligence systems, has been awarded a six-figure contract by one of the world's biggest off-road vehicle manufacturers, to use Ubisense's Smart Factory technology at one of their plants in the US.

The Ubisense system will be deployed over the remainder of 2014 at one of the company's major US heavy-duty vehicle assembly plants to improve end-of-line process efficiency. It will assist workers to test, inspect, and, if necessary, carry out any remedial work before delivery. Richard Green, Ubisense Chief Executive Officer, said: "Ubisense continues its growth of Smart Factory with this major deployment by a company widely admired worldwide for its commitment to safety, integrity, quality and innovation. As more companies deploy Ubisense solutions, our global footprint continues to expand and in turn we continue to discover new best practices in next generation manufacturing, bringing even greater benefits to our customers."

Ubisense Smart Factory provides an unprecedented level of real-time process visibility and context-sensitive controls in assembly operations. Using location sensors that link multiple information sources, it presents users with simple, actionable data and automated alerts to keep operations running as planned and manual processes free of errors. This enables manufacturers to make measurable cost reductions, quality improvements and improve process reliability while maximising flexibility.
