Rockhopper was established in 2004 with a strategy to invest in and undertake an offshore oil exploration programme in the North Falkland Basin. It was floated on AIM in August 2005. Rockhopper was the first company to make a commercial oil discovery in the Falklands. Today Rockhopper is the largest acreage holder in the North Falkland Basin, with interests in the Greater Mediterranean region.

Cynic--
There is most certainly something new in the RNS. That reclassification to a discovery is very significant.
It isn't RKH that did this its RPS, very very different, they trade solely on their reputation... This is all very good news for the NFB.

Sunday May 24,2009
By Tracey Boles Oil and gas firm Rockhopper Exploration has claimed the first independently verified discovery in the Falkland Islands.
The Aim-listed explorer has reclassified an exploration well drilled by Shell in 1998 as a giant gas discovery.
It could contain up to 8 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas.
If it turns out to have, say, 3 trillion cubic feet recoverable upon drilling, it would need specialised technology to extract it.
One technology that may be suitable is the floating liquefied natural gas platform being developed by firms such as Shell.
Rockhopper named after the penguins that populate the Falklands is in talks with potential partners who would farm in on the project as it moved towards drilling.
However, the firm is also examining other funding options.
The availability of equipment has always been a sticking point for Falklands resource firms but Rockhopper managing director Sam Moody said he was more optimistic than ever that a drilling rig would become available due to the exploration lull elsewhere in the world.
Independent energy consultancy RPS verified the discovery and also confirmed eight oil prospects that could contain one billion barrels.
Geological surveys show the area may have oil reserves to rival any North Sea field. Five exploration firms including Rockhopper are active in the region.

now almost 36p, doubled in 3 days
yes cynic i went on holiday for 1 week once and came back to find one of my shares trashed..........i been looking at these but never had the guts to buy, not even a small amount
also i remember cairn from years ago and seeing them rocket one day and saying thats it, missed another one..........the shares added about another 29 or 30 pounds, doh.
maybe thats why i hold long term from now on and think that is wise from 2009 onwards as most companies can only get stronger

personally, i still see no good reason to buy and shall be more than happy for the likes of markymar to thumb their noses at me ...... however, to repeat yet again - these guys have not even started drilling yet let alone found anything

Marni is clearly right about the renewed excitement surrounding the Falklands'
potential - see also the Oilbarrel Newsletter:
Rockhopper Gas Discovery Hints at Falklands Potential
And the long-term view also seems sensible here - unless you like riding a roller-coaster (as I did for a while last year).
Don't forget the trio of companies: RKH, FOGL and DES all operate in the Falklands.
Reckon a long-term hold, and forget about it for a few years, should bring rewards for the grandchildren.

i got told off by another person for holding long term too saying its for mugs or words to that affect.
most investment companies tell you to invest for at least 5 years.....anyway i aint going into that as that will open up a can of worms

look at bp......stagnant for over a decade!!! thats what i call a crap company to have......at least with this, shares rise quickly or fall but in long run i think you will break even at least.
also, i go on threads on sime dodgy shares like this to get a feeling.......and you seem to constantly bash these companies......ok its a comment but if 2 or 3 do this i must admit it puts me off putting even a little money to test the water.
the falklands is all that uk has left to pull it out of the sh?t

short term is relative .... yes, i am an active trader, but then i am able to watch most days most of the time ..... don't forget that the purpose of the exercise is to make money, and just as one may sell too early, it is equally true that an awful lot of money is lost by hanging on too long ..... the last year's history throws up many examples of exactly that

if you look at 1984 onwards, just 1987, 2000-2002 and 2008 were the very bad years.........otherwise uptrend for the rest.......not sure what u r trying to get at again.....you seem to contradict yourself between the threads......as i said, u could be a labour mp.
as i keep on saying, the most successful people EVER are the ones that buy good companies and keep on holding for long term.....some hold as long as 30 years!!
go check buffett and others that made billions

marni, whilst I agree to some extent re holding for the long term, there are loads of co's that were deemed good, where you could be seriously out of pocket by holding for years ie, BT.A, VOD, any of the Banks, Housebuilders, DSGI, DEB and many other retailers, the market is littered with such co's. The argument for short term trading is that with the exception of VOD (and poss BT.A) all the above could have made a fair packet if bought in feb/mar, so timing is crucial.
Good Luck All
