Rockhopper was established in 2004 with a strategy to invest in and undertake an offshore oil exploration programme in the North Falkland Basin. It was floated on AIM in August 2005. Rockhopper was the first company to make a commercial oil discovery in the Falklands. Today Rockhopper is the largest acreage holder in the North Falkland Basin, with interests in the Greater Mediterranean region.

HARRYCAT - 10 Nov 2010 11:38 - 3909 of 6294

More importantly, I heard on the news this morning that the MoD have said they will be unable to defend the FI's if the Aircraft carriers & Harriers are scrapped/mothballed (which looks like a done deal).

They have extended the airport at Port Stanley.....takes eurofighters (Typhoons) now....

HARRYCAT - 10 Nov 2010 13:08 - 3912 of 6294

Of course rf, but if you need to deploy more air support in a hurry from the U.k......then what? Complicated situation, but calls for some very careful planning from the MoD.

You fly to gibralter....down to dakar....from there to st helena ....on to tristan....and then a little hop to the the falklands...easy..peasy....

HARRYCAT - 10 Nov 2010 13:24 - 3915 of 6294

I think you will find that non-stop via The Azores, with in-flight refuelling is the fastest way (as per the Vulcan's).

Balerboy - 10 Nov 2010 13:24 - 3916 of 6294

LOL....Chris.....are there many sand banks down there.,.

Chris Carson - 10 Nov 2010 13:29 - 3917 of 6294

Balerboy - :O) you gotta laugh!

chav - 10 Nov 2010 13:35 - 3918 of 6294

rf...lol...interesting route you are flying there!!..no Airports on St helena or Tristan De Cunha.

Stanley Airport is the same size and cannot take Typoons or any other normal fast Jet...they had arrester gear fitted post 1982 for the Phantoms untill MPA was built.

MPA can handle any Jets and could be reinforced within a few hours using Mid Air refueling, which is how the current Typoons got there...the general plan is that the resident forces only have to hold out till the rapid reinforcement occurs.

avsec - 10 Nov 2010 13:55 - 3919 of 6294

Not sure that worked the last time.....MPA would quickly go the way Moody Brook went. Prime target.
We might have to ask friends to provide the tanker coverage for the numbers required unless we are prepared to wait for the new tanker fleet to come in a few years time...

chav - 10 Nov 2010 14:03 - 3920 of 6294

avsec...has you should know, there was no chance of rapid reinforcement in 1982 and only a handful of Marines, half of which had borrowed guns from the local volunteers, plus HMS Endurance was hardly a fighting ship compared to the current coverage.

MPA and the current Military asset's in the Falklands as always been geared towards the rapid reinforcement scenario, since 82'.

FALKLAND ISLANDS GOVERNMENT

PRESS STATEMENT

10 November 2010

Response to joint letter from Royal Navy Admirals November 10th 2010

The Falkland Islands Government is satisfied by and grateful for the levels of defence on the Islands, which Her Majestys Government has assured us are adequate to maintain an effective deterrent.

There are no direct defence cuts relating to the Falkland Islands. Members of the Legislative Assembly are content with the reassurances that they have been given by Her Majestys Government that the Strategic Defence Spending Review does not in any way change the UKs ability to maintain the deterrent in the Islands.
