Hornby - real toys are not dead yet! (HRN)

Bones - 05 Jun 2003 10:06

Another set of results to please the eye and the chart says it all:

Low PE ratio and PEG is enough to make Jim Slater foam at the mouth. Whatever, I've added some to the old SIPP at 685p.

Good for the co. but a sad day for UK manufacturing, I believe they now get all the gear made in Asia, prior to that they lost a fortune, so we have to go where health and safety is non-existant, wages at slave levels etc. before we can make money, made in Britain RIP, time to look at our red tape a little closer- preferably thro` the wrong end of a telescope

Bones - 09 Jun 2003 10:45 - 7 of 19

Very noble comments Sequestor. Unfortunately, in Britain and Europe, there are two powerful forces at work. (1) Employees (unions etc) who insist on being paid a minimum wage so as to make manufacturing unprofitable; and (2) consumers who insist on paying as little as possible for their goods and services. Something has to give and British workers and consumers will have to live with their selfishness. Unlike you, most British people I suspect will not pay extra for their goodies to save a few Chinese workers from going back to the paddy fields.

Anyway, I bet you a thousand renmimbi that the Chinese workers are very pleased to see factories springing up all over the place which increases their own prosperity. Makes a change from the real poverty of the paddy fields.

And, no, I am not making a political point, only stating the facts, however unpalatable they may be to vendors of the Socialist Worker.

Chuff chuff.

Sequestor - 09 Jun 2003 10:52 - 8 of 19

Actually you read me totally wrongly, I was trying to put over a right of center view, I abhore the common market and its silly rules, if we had less of them and workers were allowed to make considered decisions on their on H&S, and employers ditto , as we used too here , we would all be better off.
Nobility doesn`t come into it I object to having to pay my tax to support our workers on the dole, conscience however does prick a little at slave wages .

Bones - 09 Jun 2003 11:01 - 9 of 19

Ooops, sorry Sequestor. Monday mornings for you! Good job I don't see my boss first thing :)

I agree with you on those issues of overburdening regulations etc. I also think it is a crying shame that traditional British products are no longer made here.

BUT, we have made our beds over decades of gross bad political leadership (leadership?) and now lie in them. Never mind, the weather's fine....!

Cheers
Bones

AGREED

moneymakesmoney - 16 Jun 2003 15:39 - 11 of 19

Looks like a great story unfolding and what a chart!

Bones - 18 Jun 2003 11:59 - 12 of 19

Two weeks on and HRN is up 100p or 15%. Good yield and low PER after strong organic growth is leading to a big rerating. The chart has a mountainous look to it now :)

I have trimmed my holding by 30% nonetheless. That has lowered my average original investment to 655p per share. Current price 787p.

Hornby PLC
24 July 2003

CHAIRMAN'S AGM STATEMENT

Speaking at the Annual General Meeting of Hornby Plc, ('Hornby') the models and
collectables Group, the Chairman Neil Johnson, will make the following
statement.

' I wrote in my recent Chairman's Statement for the year ended March 31st 2003,
that 'Your Board believes that there are significant opportunities to grow our
business organically'. I am delighted to report that the Group's trading in the
first few months of the current year has met our expectations.

' Sales of both our Hornby and Scalextric ranges are encouraging. These have
been assisted by a number of important new product launches, such as the 8F and
King Locomotives and 'The Simpsons' Micro Scalextric.

' Our UK channels of distribution have performed well and we have also seen
further improvements in performance, both from our US and other overseas
markets.

' Looking to the future, the Group's prospects remain bright. The ongoing
increase in interest in both Hornby and Scalextric is being matched by an
encouraging level of sales.

' The Board looks forward to reporting further progress.'

Just a wee snippet from todays interim statement.

Hornby PLC
14 November 2003

HORNBY BOOSTED BY NEW PRODUCTS
AS INTERIM RESULTS SPARKLE

Hornby Plc ('Hornby'), the models and collectables Group, has today
announced its interim results for the six months to 30 September 2003.
Hornby's two main products are Hornby model railways and Scalextric slot car
racing systems.

Pre-tax profits up by 33% to 2.2 million (2002: 1.7 million)

Sales up by 13% to 15.8 million (2002: 14.0 million)

Diluted earnings per share up to 19.5p (2002: 14.4p)

Concessions increased from 52 to over 100 in operation

Successful launch of Hornby 'Live Steam' range

World-wide Licence secured for launch of Scalextric MotoGP motorcycle range

Cash position improved by 1.6 million to 3.1 million

Interim dividend increased to 8.0p (2002: 6.0p)

Frank Martin, Chief Executive of Hornby, said,

' I am delighted that Hornby has succeeded in re-discovering the magic that
has enchanted both children and adults for years. There is now a huge level
of interest among collectors and enthusiasts for our highly detailed
products. This, combined with the appetite of parents for traditional
'hands-on' toys, has continued to fuel the growth in sales across both
Hornby and Scalextric.

' This 'nostalgia' driven interest was demonstrated clearly at the launch of
our 'Live Steam' range of Hornby locomotives. We are confident that our
continued focus on building a healthy pipeline of new products will open up
new markets for us and continue the momentum in sales growth that we have
enjoyed over recent years.

' We have achieved excellent exposure for our products in time for the
important Christmas period. Retailers are recognising the commercial
opportunity represented by the Hornby and Scalextric ranges. We are
delighted that we have strengthened our distribution base in the High
Street. This, combined with the strength of our other retail customers and
the excellent performance delivered by the 100 concessions that we operate,
should ensure a strong pre-Christmas trading period.'

Well a year on here since the last post , and friday comes again the 12th november intrim results, should be good.
Moto gp is there latest venture , and if trying to get hold of them is anything to go by its a winner , i have bought all the bikes and at 30 each the first editions will be worth a mint in 20 years.
I am a big fan of the cars old/new , from my very first set mid 70s mk11 escort black paint gold stripes/porche 911 in dark green , it gripped like stink on the banked curves , now its the sport track for the new generation , shame its the dads with the money and not the kids.
The limited edition cars now have a plastic card with them with a number on , a couple of pound extra for the privilege.
Know sign of the peugeot 307 in the shops yet , they did say release date last quarter of the year , so they do have a habit of leaving these things very late , so that would concern me , christmas sales , and last minute rush.
Happy to hold and keep hold..

daves dazzlers - 12 Nov 2004 07:29 - 19 of 19

Great start to the new era,all these products ,all doing well, never in doubt.
something to be said, for being a dad you get to play with the best toys , RESULT..
