Rockhopper was established in 2004 with a strategy to invest in and undertake an offshore oil exploration programme in the North Falkland Basin. It was floated on AIM in August 2005. Rockhopper was the first company to make a commercial oil discovery in the Falklands. Today Rockhopper is the largest acreage holder in the North Falkland Basin, with interests in the Greater Mediterranean region.

It about sums this up

However efforts to build on this initial oil discovery have resulted in something of a riddle for the companies as well as top analysts in the Square Mile.

Despite a lengthy exploration programme that has followed only the original Sea Lion well has provided any concrete results. Both Rockhopper and Desire have had a number of complex well results that whilst not abject failures, have certainly disappointed investors.

Most recently the 14/10-3 well, which was drilled to 2,830 metres, 8 kilometres away from the Sea Lion discovery well, hit four separate reservoir sections, oil and gas shows were detected throughout drilling and live oil was recovered to surface. However on further testing three of the four reservoirs were found to have high water saturation (above 90 percent).
Meanwhile in the remaining reservoir Rockhopper has recovered samples via a mini drill stem test (DST) - with 20 percent live oil, which is indicated to be medium gravity. This reservoir, referred to as Sand 3, had 64 percent water saturation.
Although Rockhopper described the results as encouraging they clearly fell short of expectations. As each well comes and goes it seems that Rockhopper and Desire have been finding more questions than answers.

Rockhopper, and its investors, will be hoping that the Sea Lion appraisal results can re-ignite some confidence in this enigmatic oil frontier.

Repsol-YPF contract UK flagged vessels for Malvinas basin exploration
Repsol-YPF planned exploration for hydrocarbons in the Malvinas basin, off Tierra del Fuego has suffered a major public relations setback following on the Buenos Aires press revelation that the two vessels contracted for the job not only are UK flagged but also have links with the current oil exploration round in Falkland Islands waters.

Well I have sold other stocks today and have just re topped up on RKH whether its stupidity or greed..guess in 30 days I will know if it was good or bad decision.

HARRYCAT - 22 Feb 2011 13:54 - 4338 of 6294

Amazing that we all thought that fair value was c300p! Currently 235p and I am tempted to top up also, just for the bounce when they reach TD. I wonder though if the original expectations of recoverable oil are now starting to disappoint?

I can't quite believe the level it's got to......a discovery is a discovery and tested....but the market doesn't seem to be taking that in....

gibby - 22 Feb 2011 14:35 - 4340 of 6294

LOL - time to buy me thinks
US open now dudes and nice low sp!!
yeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

required field - 22 Feb 2011 15:17 - 4341 of 6294

I'm way overweight on this stock now......crumbs !......if this does not hit oil of some kind...ouch !....incredibly this latest well is only just over a mile from the main discovery and the markets drops the sp like a stone......

required field - 22 Feb 2011 15:19 - 4342 of 6294

Who on earth is selling this ?......they must be at a bad loss.....ridiculous.....

Time Traveller - 22 Feb 2011 15:29 - 4343 of 6294

The sellers could be all those who bought under 100p and are seeing their gains being whittled away but still have good profts to bank. Remember of course that it is never wrong to take a profit. The only trouble with closing out positions right now is that there could be a massive spike when the results are known. The big question is what will the falls be like is the results of this well are poor. I don't want to think about that scenario!

I am also overweight with this stock at present,i have done my sums and it should be sitting around the 3.50 mark with a 170 mill barrels of oil found.

I see John Dodd's Artemis Global Energy fund had a little write up on city wire yesterday saying that"Long term Dodd favourites Salamander Energy and Falklands based Rockhopper Exploration also make it into the portfolio, as does Shrewdie pick Tullow Oil and North Sea oil firm Premier Oil."

Guess time is the answer....

XEL is another been hit hard with CPR due any time.

Not pleasant looking at my portfolio at present time

gildph - 22 Feb 2011 16:14 - 4345 of 6294

Not pleasant - it's a nightmare - 10s of 1000's shredded away in a matter of week when though RKH and XEL would be rocketing by now!

cynic - 22 Feb 2011 16:47 - 4346 of 6294

marky - at least i hold both tlw and pmo (and afr) as well as rkh (and xel)

markymar - 22 Feb 2011 17:05 - 4347 of 6294

Fingers crossed that they both bounce soon, its like a blood bath at moment, been sitting wondering if i should sell CAZA and buy RKH as i can see more upside in RKH in the next 30 days if all goes well.

We have a 80-95% of appraisal wells successfull but it could still go tits up.

gibby - 22 Feb 2011 17:30 - 4348 of 6294

well i bought more today - i see this as the bottom or near as - how much further can it drop - i can hardly believe the current sp and my good fortune to get more so low - bounce must be imminent surely by the end of this week - mach will soon pass as each day we get nearer to the results

gibby - 22 Feb 2011 17:30 - 4349 of 6294

typo last message - sorry - meant march will soon pass not mach

ptholden - 22 Feb 2011 18:08 - 4350 of 6294

Although the Sea Lion discovery was originally considered the first of what was expected to be many, I suspect the DES drills and recently RKHs, are beginning to cast doubt on the NFB. In the unlikley event Sea Lion remains the only discovery I imagine its location may make it non-commercial due to the sheer logisitcs (and political sensitivities) in extracting / transporting the oil.

Quite frankly I'd be amazed if Sea Lion remains in isolation, but who knows?
