Rockhopper was established in 2004 with a strategy to invest in and undertake an offshore oil exploration programme in the North Falkland Basin. It was floated on AIM in August 2005. Rockhopper was the first company to make a commercial oil discovery in the Falklands. Today Rockhopper is the largest acreage holder in the North Falkland Basin, with interests in the Greater Mediterranean region.

It about sums this up
However efforts to build on this initial oil discovery have resulted in something of a riddle for the companies as well as top analysts in the Square Mile.
Despite a lengthy exploration programme that has followed only the original Sea Lion well has provided any concrete results. Both Rockhopper and Desire have had a number of complex well results that whilst not abject failures, have certainly disappointed investors.
Most recently the 14/10-3 well, which was drilled to 2,830 metres, 8 kilometres away from the Sea Lion discovery well, hit four separate reservoir sections, oil and gas shows were detected throughout drilling and live oil was recovered to surface. However on further testing three of the four reservoirs were found to have high water saturation (above 90 percent).
Meanwhile in the remaining reservoir Rockhopper has recovered samples via a mini drill stem test (DST) - with 20 percent live oil, which is indicated to be medium gravity. This reservoir, referred to as Sand 3,
had 64 percent water saturation.
Although Rockhopper described the results as encouraging they clearly fell short of expectations. As each well comes and goes it seems that Rockhopper and Desire have been finding more questions than answers.
Rockhopper, and its investors, will be hoping that the Sea Lion appraisal results can re-ignite some confidence in this enigmatic oil frontier.

You got to laugh at that!!!!!!
Repsol-YPF contract UK flagged vessels for Malvinas basin exploration
Repsol-YPF planned exploration for hydrocarbons in the Malvinas basin, off Tierra del Fuego has suffered a major public relations setback following on the Buenos Aires press revelation that the two vessels contracted for the job not only are UK flagged but also have links with the current oil exploration round in Falkland Islands waters.

Amazing that we all thought that fair value was c300p! Currently 235p and I am tempted to top up also, just for the bounce when they reach TD. I wonder though if the original expectations of recoverable oil are now starting to disappoint?

I can't quite believe the level it's got to......a discovery is a discovery and tested....but the market doesn't seem to be taking that in....

The sellers could be all those who bought under 100p and are seeing their gains being whittled away but still have good profts to bank. Remember of course that it is never wrong to take a profit. The only trouble with closing out positions right now is that there could be a massive spike when the results are known. The big question is what will the falls be like is the results of this well are poor. I don't want to think about that scenario!

Not pleasant - it's a nightmare - 10s of 1000's shredded away in a matter of week when though RKH and XEL would be rocketing by now!

Although the Sea Lion discovery was originally considered the first of what was expected to be many, I suspect the DES drills and recently RKHs, are beginning to cast doubt on the NFB. In the unlikley event Sea Lion remains the only discovery I imagine its location may make it non-commercial due to the sheer logisitcs (and political sensitivities) in extracting / transporting the oil.
Quite frankly I'd be amazed if Sea Lion remains in isolation, but who knows?

pth - yes had thought that myself about sea lion - but the likelyhood of that being the only strike / discovery in that area must be extremely remote - if it is however unlikely then yep i believe as a single strike it would not be viable to proceed - but i doubt that will happen but hey ho...
