Just been trawling through Sharescope and seem to have noticed something I hadn't realised before.

The 'Dead Cross' has historically proven to be powerful bearish indicator and I mean the 50MA crossing the 200MA whilst both are heading South (not shorter term MAs). But by definition by the time this occurs the SP is already signficantly oversold and perhaps due a bounce. I found a few stocks today and wasn't looking especially hard where a Dead Cross is evident, however the SP has recovered, burning any shorters whilst doing so. What is interesting is that the recovery is checked by the 50MA or in the vicinity of, before the SP recommences the downward path. Perhaps the secret of this indicator is wait for the recovery and then short away?

goldfinger - 25 Oct 2010 08:33 - 439 of 3532

Interesting point PJH.

Can you actually screen for this occurence with sharescope. Ive never had the software but thought about purchasing it or getting a free trial first.

Your thoughts appreciated.

cheers Gf.

jonuk76 - 25 Oct 2010 10:26 - 440 of 3532

Interesting point PTH. I think moving averages are by definition lagging indicators so by the time you see the 50 cross under the 200 a down trend could be well under way. Also they can act as areas of support or resistance. Exponential MA's react a bit faster as they give a greater weighting to recent price action.

I've never used Sharescope but with most of the packages as long as you can can describe (in code) what conditions you are looking for you can screen for them. For example with the freebie package ProRealTime easy stuff like MA crossovers are included in the example screeners they provide. Simple custom screens - say you wanted to search for stocks where stochastic had just crossed above the 20 line AND the MACD was above the signal line - can be done with point and click. More complex stuff, e.g. screens combining multiple timeframes, would need a knowledge of the programming language (it mostly looks fairly easy).

goldfinger - 25 Oct 2010 15:01 - 441 of 3532

cheers jonuk.

Can you actually screen for a LIST at the end of the day say where all MACD have passed over the signal line and are still below 0 Zero?.

Sportingbet (SBT)

Maybe worth a look.

Tipped by IC Oct 6th as a buy. Since fallen back from 81.5 p to 66.5p

Latest results were good and their problem with USA seems to have been settled.

However, there has been some fairly large sales (just after I bought) by directors.

I think this is responsible for a drop in Share price due to overhang.

Looking at charts I think (hope) it has bottomed out and is I think developing a bullish gravestone doji and is

Anyway worth keeping and eye on, or taking the plunge with a close stop at 65.18p and another at your own choice.

There is a small div.2.25%yield

GF, yes that's no problem. I just made a screener to do that quickly. Note I've limited the results below to the programs "UK300" list which is the top 300 LSE companies. If you just choose the entire LSE (which you can do) it comes up with all sorts of stuff in the results like warrants and ETF's. It would be nice if you could choose more logical lists e.g. FTSE350, FTSE Small Cap etc, but unfortunately not.

ptholden - 25 Oct 2010 17:48 - 444 of 3532

GF / Jonuk

I believe you can set SS to datamine by any criteria, problem is I don't have a clue how to do it! I just flick through charts one by one looking for interesting set ups and go from there. I have a SS datamining tuition CD somewhere, perhaps I'll get off me arse and dig it out.

Incidentally, I would imagine the same criteria would probably be relevant for the Golden Cross, however, I haven't looked.

goldfinger - 25 Oct 2010 20:31 - 445 of 3532

Cheers chaps very interesting.

been trialling out software from prorealtime which looks very similar to your chart jonuk

Seymour Clearly - 25 Oct 2010 22:12 - 446 of 3532

pth, I used to user Sharescope and I'm sure it was very powerful, but it was never very intuitive, so I gave up. I just ran through the charts (which was very easy) also looking for interesting setups. I'll give the free eod prorealtime a try - looks very good.

If anyone's interested I have the full set of Sharescope training CDs which I never got round to looking at properly.

goldfinger - 26 Oct 2010 01:01 - 447 of 3532

SC please let us know how you go on with the eod prorealtime.

cheers.

hilary - 26 Oct 2010 07:38 - 448 of 3532

I'm being lazy here by not checking it out myself, but does ProRealtime allow daily OHLC data export to CSV?

Seymour Clearly - 26 Oct 2010 11:11 - 449 of 3532

GF, will do. Looks pretty good as far as I can see, but I've only had 30 mins at it to date.

Hiltops, from the user manual, there is an option to export all the data, including, it appears, OHLC (althought they call it Open, High, Low and Last - as well as lots of other data including volume). I'll have a proper look later, got family staying atm so a bit busy:

How to export data
First open the list containing the datafeed to export
The ProRealTime DDE exports the data-stream related to the securities contained in the list shown
in your "List" window. You can display only one list at time and every list contains a maximum of 50
securities. Thus, a maximum of 50 securities can be exported real-time.
Then select the data kind
From the "Copy DDE Link" menu in the "ProRealTime DDE Stream" window, you can select the
kind of data that you wish to export into your DDE enabled external software.
You can choose between the default configuration, which exports Ticker, Name and Last , or the All
Items configuration that exports all the items shown in the image below:

The manual is at:

hilary - 26 Oct 2010 11:32 - 450 of 3532

Thanks for that, Floss. The 50 max stocks thing looks like it could be a bit of a pain.

jonuk76 - 26 Oct 2010 11:37 - 451 of 3532

I looked for that myself but no, I can't see a feature to export daily data as CSV.

It does support DDE Data Export which is for exporting real time data into other programs (so only applicable to the paid for real time version).

There is a free program for automating daily data collection from free sources like Yahoo, Google, MSN, and Quotemedia - Yahoo Quote Downloader

Seymour Clearly - 26 Oct 2010 11:44 - 452 of 3532

Ah, thanks jon. Still, it's not bad for free :-)

hilary - 26 Oct 2010 12:00 - 453 of 3532

Thanks for that Yahoo/Google link, Jon.
