Late RNS out:

Sterling Energy PLC
22 June 2005

22 JUNE 2005

STERLING ENERGY PLC
('Sterling' or the 'Company')

MAURITANIA OFFSHORE DRILLING UPDATE

Sterling Energy, the AIM listed (symbol: SEY) independent oil & gas exploration
and production company, note that the following announcement was made earlier
today by Woodside Petroleum:

Woodside Mauritania Pty Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Woodside Petroleum
Ltd., reports that the first three exploration locations for its 2005
Mauritanian exploration drilling sequence have been selected.

Two of the wells, Sotto and Colin, will target relatively high risk but
potentially high reward prospects in PSC Area A. The third well, Espadon, is
targeting a medium risk, moderate reward prospect close to the Tiof Discovery in
PSC Area B. It is planned to begin drilling these wells in late July 2005 using
the Stena Tay drill rig.

A further three wells are likely before the end of the year, including one in
PSC Area C6. Subsequent announcements will be made concerning these wells.

The West Navigator drill ship continues working on Chinguetti development wells.

Woodside does not plan to issue announcements regarding operations on Chinguetti
development wells, but will do so if necessary to comply with its continuous
disclosure obligations under the ASX Listing Rules.

Harry Wilson, Chief Executive of Sterling Energy Plc, said:

'This is further good news from Mauritania. The commencement of a new
exploration drilling sequence in the PSC Areas A and B extends Sterling's upside
potential beyond the already successful Chinguetti development. Production from
Chinguetti is on target for Q1 2006 and will bring a step change in our cash
flow.'

Oilbarrel Conference

On 21 June 2005, Sterling participated in the oilbarrel investor conference in
London. Sterling's presentation to the conference is available on the Company's
website -

All,

Sorry been busy with carpet fitters and other duties around the house today.

I attended the Oilbarrel conference yesterday, and was duly impressed with the Sterling presentation, but there was nothing new really.

Amongst the notes I made were that Osprey was one third repaid in the first ten months of ownership, and they were looking to double production again this year.
SEY are looking to rework some wells that were uneconomic to rework in the past.

CAmeroon -

on hold due to a border dispute.

Guinea -

Noted that the other company were advancing the project at a pace that even SEY thought was too fast to be pruduent!

Gabon -

Drilling soon on Iris, nest month, and later on Themis.

Madagascar -

The concession is enormous, and SEY used an overlay of the N. Sea, to emphasise it's size! The licence has an 18 month lifespan, and can be renewed.

2D is possible within a year, and SEY are considering farming out, and have received many enquiries form larger companies regarding this.

Forum - Philippines

SEY are confident of sucess, and hold a 23% interest.

Sey mentioned they had hedged approximately 50% of US gas production, and also some mauritanian production, for the first two years, in a range of $38 - $42 (I think!), and then upwards over $50 PB, to protect the upside if oil remains highly priced in the longer term.

Sorry it's brief, but H. Wilson did not give the presentation, and the guy that did spoke quite quickly IMO.

As I say, nothing earth shattering, but they seemd confident enough, so I left more than satisfied.

gavdfc - 22 Jun 2005 21:04 - 4385 of 7811

Andy,

Thanks for your write up, sounds positive, as does the presentation. Good to hear that there is a lot of interest from others in the Madagascar acreage. No doubt SEY will pull of a decent deal here. As you say, not a lot of totally new info, but positive all the same.

Andy - 22 Jun 2005 21:15 - 4386 of 7811

Gavdfc,

thanks.

Sorry I forgot to post that one memeber of the audience questioned whether SEY may join the main market.

The respondent said that SEY were happy to remain on AIM for the foreseeable future, and the "flexibility" of AIM had enabled SEY to grow and push through the deals thay have done in the last year, and that would not have been possible on the main market.

I am happy with this, not least because my BATR would be ruined if they left AIM, and I would like at least one more year before they do!

gavdfc - 23 Jun 2005 07:54 - 4387 of 7811

Andy,

Thanks for that.

proptrade - 23 Jun 2005 09:05 - 4388 of 7811

Andy, cheers for the feedback.

seawallwalker - 23 Jun 2005 09:27 - 4389 of 7811
