They are not cheap in France either..prices for some wines have rocketed...the "Chateau neuf du Pape" (not to everybody's taste) from the southern Rhone region is now over 10 pounds...just a rip off...

grower/negociant is of prime importance every time ...... duboeuf makes good commercial stuff when it is as stated (another story) but there is an awful lot of thin acidic about too
for good advice, nicholas (took over oddbins) and majestic are usually pretty knowledgeable .... and of course the quality indies know their stuff

CNdP can cost a great deal more than that and still be good value ..... again, you get back to the prob of generic wines
Perrin is among the best - happens to make it organically - and Guigal is pretty good too ..... plenty of good/adequate growers and a huge number of acidic piss makers/takers
=======
you need to differentiate between straight Brouilly and Cote de Brouilly ..... and of course the grower as always plays a huge part

i know a little .... used to know more, especially when i used to go to the auctions regularly ...... quite hilly cycling on the beauj villages side of the saone, so we are splitting it with the other bank, where there are some big surprises, like a huge area of artificial lakes dating back to 18th century or thereabouts (Les Dombes)

Kurdistan oil strike delivers barrels by the million
Tamsin Carlisle
Last Updated: August 25. 2009 3:50PM UAE / August 25. 2009 11:50AM GMT Gulf Keystone Petroleum may have found up to six times as much oil in Iraqi Kurdistan as it originally thought, making its oil strike the second multibillion barrel discovery in the region this year.
After encountering more oil while drilling its Shaikan-1 test well deeper, the British company said it revised its estimate of oil in place to between 1.5 billion and 3 billion barrels. That is up from the 300 million and 500 million barrel estimate it made earlier this month, and could translate to as much as 2 billion barrels of recoverable crude.
The Shaikan-1 is proving to be a value-transforming discovery for Gulf Keystone, said Todd Kozel, the executive chairman of the company. Even at this early stage, the commerciality of this discovery is substantially strengthened.
Heritage Oil, the Canadian oil explorer that is merging with Turkeys Genel Enerji, announced in May that it found a giant oilfield in Kurdistan containing up to 3 billion barrels of recoverable crude.
Kurdistan, a semiautonomous region in northeastern Iraq, is one of the few jurisdictions with substantial untapped oil reserves that encourages junior oil companies to come and explore.
