With video search set to be the next big growth area BLNX have the software the likes of Microsoft, Google and NewsCorp would love to have.

In fact BLNX have done deals with most of these, the most recent being the UtargetFox deal which has been reported in the USA but not RNS'd in the UK.

The Harvard professor at the centre of a row with Blinkx has accused the British internet video company of trying to make him into a scapegoat rather than admit that he has uncovered real problems in its business.

Ben Edelman, whose blog post last week has been followed by a 40pc drop in the Blinkx share price, insisted he stood by his criticisms, even though the company has reported him to the Financial Conduct Authority for alleged market manipulation.

“Blinkx seeks to make this a story about me rather than about their adware and their schemes against both advertisers and consumers,” he told The Telegraph. “Blinkx’s refusal to respond in substance, and their instinct to attack my character rather than discuss the actual practice, is telling.”

you can read it both ways .... however, i am i not correct in saying that this fairly unsavoury Zango episode, on which edelman hangs so much of his "research" was sorted and resolved at least 2/3 years ago, and thus has no real relevance in assessing the company today?

whether or not BLNX is as hot in its field as it says - and others say rubbish - i really cannot judge
however, if BLNX is reporting genuine profitability, which most assuredly it is, then my simpleton's brain tells me that loads of physical money has to be coming into the company .....
yes, i guess "sales" can be booked prematurely, but though i have no pretense at any accounting knowledge at all, surely there is a pretty short window within which those "sales" will have to materialise as cash or be written out for "non performance" or similar?

Edelman is suggesting that the frauds from a few years ago are still going on and that the fraudulent technology is still embedded in the current systems. He points out the huge revenues and the rate being double per employee against competitors. If he is right then their advertisers are being grossly overcharged. The comments from Edelman seem quite strident and showed no element of regret or contrition about his original article.

It is a two way bet. If he is correct then Blinkx are probably still way overvalued and will crash. If Blinkx can prove him wrong then it will soar. My guess is that he is right. When companies have revenues that look to good to be true, then they nearly always are. I have never liked their business model and have expected this crash.

The advertisers are paying what they agree to...there is no point in complaining if you agree to something...though I too thought the stock would drop when it was around 200p....and did not buy any at that level....but now with a 50% drop in sp...might be a bargain !..

hays - for all that, you do not answer the accounting points i raise ..... so to repeat - though BLNX could claim unrealistic "sales" for a fairly short time, surely that would be blown wide open when the next audit came along, because there would be no in-coming revenue trail

as for edelman, he absolutely cannot afford to show any contrition even if it is warranted

That's not correct. They are paying for genuine exposure. The argument from Edelman is that the video views/clicks are false and fraudently inflated by the underlying software. If it is true then they have been paying too much and the revenues are higher than if there was no fraud.

The revenue is real. Edelman is suggesting that Blinkx has and is overcharging their customers by pretending that there are more views of the clients adverts than has actually happened.

so the complaint is merely overcharging .... nothing "unfair" in that, any more than for the cost of petrol on the motorways

as has already been pointed out, if BLNX was fraudulently and significantly magnifying the results to their clients, then surely those clients would recognise that pretty quickly, for assuredly they will know from the results achieved in comparison to other sites that they and the rest of the industry use

that BLNX does not seem to have lost any contracts of note, would seem to knock a big hole in edelman's claims
whether or not contracts are now lost subsequent to edelman's so-called revelations remains to be seen, but i'm sure that already industry negative reaction would have rife if that was to be the result

How would they know if the results via Blinkx were better or worse than adverts on videos on other sites/systems. That type of direct marketing is very difficult to measure. I used to have a business involved in direct marketing. Without a direct response method, it is almost impossible to measure the effectiveness. The secret for Blinkx is to persuade clients and advertising agencies that their technology provides better exposure for the end client. That is probably about good salesmen at Blinkx.

even if what you say is true (really?), certainly BLNX's subscribers must be happy enough with the results, for otherwise they would walk away in droves

They may not be so happy if they find out they have been defrauded and have had only say half the exposure that they have paid for. They are happy at present because they think they are getting what they are paying for. Big advertising spenders find it difficult to know the value of what they spend. It is often aggregated. A car maker launching a new model blitz various media and wouldn't know the effectiveness of each type of advertising.

With posted media it is very difficult. You need either a direct response method, such as a redeemable coupon or a lot of analysis. We used to do a lot of statistical analysis to see the uplift due to direct marketing. The problem is that you have to stabilise other forms of advertising to a fixed level while you send out mailings before, during and after the mail shot to measure the benefit. Many companies just can't do that as their advertising budgets are spent for long periods ahead.

It is the same with digital media. The problem is a gift to anyone bent on fraud. Blinkx's subsidiary WAS involved in fraud previously and this is well documented. Edelman is suggesting that the culture still exists and that the fraudulent software is still embedded in the current systems.

If Blinkx is doing this, then you can be sure that others are as well.
