Winner put his shirt on telecoms

TELECOMS and T-shirts are not natural bedfellows. But like most entrepreneurs, Peter Dubens, the Alternative Investment Market Entrepreneur of the Year, has an eye for an opportunity in every sector.
Mr Dubens, 38, received his award last night for building Pipex Communications, the broadband internet and web-hosting company of which he is chairman, into one of the leading broadband providers.



But he is best known for the heat-sensitive T-shirts that became a cult clothing item in the 1980s. He sold T-shirts worth more than $26 million (14.6 million) in the first year of trading, and then sold the business to Coats Viyella for a few million.

Pipex Communications, formerly GX Networks, has been created through assembling smaller players. It has bought eight companies since 2002.

In its first-half results last month, the company revealed its first positive earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation of 4.9 million with net losses narrowing to 1.9 million from 3.8 million a year earlier.

Mr Dubens, a boxer who is also chairman of Ukbetting, the online betting firm, frequently describes himself as the fittest fat man you are likely to come across.

His success, he says, is mainly down to good luck and quiet aggression.

Mr Dubens left the ceremony clutching two trophies: Pipex Communications also scooped the title of Best Use of AIM Award 2004.

One of Pipexs most recent acquisitions was Nildram, the dot-com company owned by Sean and Ruth Stephenson. The couple made 11 million from the sale of their broadband business to Mr Dubens.

Analysts believe that Pipex could itself now become a target for bigger players, such as Cable & Wireless.

All good publicity.. but still no positve impact on the share price :(
At some point, don't know when, SP has got to double, at least ! :).. PXC is going to be far bigger than it is today or be taken over by one of the big players ! If this is the case, it should start a massive bidding war...however, I think any potential bidders will want to see how the next set of results turn out in about 6 months! (all imho)

500,000 buy at 8.25p looks a bit tastey!

Yes, wierd isn't it.. everyones carried on selling & there was 250,000 sold @ 7.75p what's going on ?

This has been sideways for so long now, i hope its basing ready to break thru the resistance level, its still top up time for me.

I'm begining to think this is going nowhere. I'm getting really tempted to off load an invest elsewhere. Good company good management too many shares in issue 1106.8642 millions.

I know what you mean about too many shares in issue. However, there have been many shares like this that I've sold and then a short time after the price starts to go up and I've missed out. Only to find that the share I've gone into instead goes down or does nothing either. Good luck whatever you do.

I know how you feel. Seems a good company but you just get fed up with waiting . Especially with such an abundance of good news which has no effect at all. I sold a couple of months ago,but still keep an eye on it.

Watching this share is like listening to paint dry (no I don't mean watching paint dry, this isn't that exciting) But is there any other reasons why this share should rise? I have seen all the other reasons but this is still going sideways.

Quite a few 'unknown' trades gone through today, all at the same price of 8p. I still believe we may see a RNS declaring a substantial holding in due course. Time will tell.

See theres a lot of talk of this one being looked at by cable and Wireless.

Just wonder how much they would offer per share, any thoughts????????????.
