If you have Broadband then register for free at http://www.cantos.com and watch Jim Slater talk to Matthew Vincent, of Investors Chronicle, about Oil and Mining stocks, and in particular one of his favourite stocks.......... Sterling Energy.

stockdog,

Agreed, it always keeps us amused!

oooops, we're up .25p, but for how long?

Andy - 03 Mar 2006 10:17 - 5576 of 7811

Sutre,

Thanks for that link, looks like a good site.

Andy - 03 Mar 2006 10:44 - 5577 of 7811

stockdog,

Spoke too soon, level!

stockdog - 03 Mar 2006 11:07 - 5578 of 7811

They're thinking of changing Sterling's epic to ARF
(Sorry, doggy joke!)

Andy - 03 Mar 2006 18:46 - 5579 of 7811

stockdog,

BOL!

Interesting 2 x 800,000 trades and 1 x 350,000 after the bell, probably buys, but can't say for sure.

stockdog - 03 Mar 2006 19:31 - 5580 of 7811

Marked as buys at 23.32 v. mid price of 23.25 on Digital Look (2 X 800k + 1 X 350k).

Andy - 03 Mar 2006 19:34 - 5581 of 7811

stockdog,

Yes they were probably buys, funny how a lot of large buys are reported after the bell!

I notice it more on SEY than any other stock I follow.

stockdog - 03 Mar 2006 19:39 - 5582 of 7811

Not so funny - trades above market value are allowed to delay reporting by so much depending on how many times NMS.

Sterling's NMS is only 100,000, so an 8 X order may have been placed maybe 4 hours earlier, at least 2, but I don't know the exact formula. Anyone know?

4 hours earlier the quote was 23.25 - 23.50 (with mid quoted as 23.50), a mid price of 23.375, making them possible sells.

Who knows, but watch the SP on Monday morning.

Stockie - do you think these relatively small amounts really matter at this stage?

SP seems range bound just now, every time it tries to test 25p it drops back.

Needs some good positive news to break through, although it will continue to test that for a while imo without.

stockdog - 04 Mar 2006 19:09 - 5584 of 7811

No - nothing much matters in the market when the fundamentals are as strong as they are for SEY, plus the takeover agenda. But still curious as to how market factors affect the price in the short term. It is a peculiar stock that is so stubborn to reflect value in the SP - compared to FOGL who haven't drilled a cm yet, for example.

That said, looking at the 3 year chart and ignoring 2005's virtually sideways progression, we are right back on track within the original 2003/04 channel. We should be able to maintain this pattern as Ching's cashflow builds up and maybe Exxon/Madagascar hots up later this year. A takeover should probably double the current price - but no idea really. Over a 5 year view a takeover at 50p will look cheap in retrospect, I reckon (that's why they bought it, dummy!).

Is there any reason why we should have to wait till May for prelims this year? Be nice to get them out by end of March, since there are no major capital programmes, Ching has started and hopefully GoM is back on full stream after the hurricanes last year. So nothing to wait for that I can see to be included in them and an early announcement should by now vindicate the $97m loan to Mauritanian govt. I'd like to get a bit closer to the current fundamentals which I feel have drifted out of my grasp with so much happening over the last year.

Here endeth the waffle!

bad weather in gulf expected this year:
sterling look out

Looking at the 2006 Atlantic season, Weather 2000 said its research, along with atmospheric and oceanographic parameters, are pointing towards a lot of activity. The company said it would not be surprised to see 15-22 named storms, eight-13 hurricanes and four-seven intense hurricanes.

The Colorado State forecasting team, which is now led by Philip J. Klotzbach, is a little more conservative in its prediction. The team's 2006 Atlantic hurricane outlook calls for 17 named tropical storms (9.6 is average) of which nine would be Hurricanes (5.9 is average) of which five would be intense hurricanes (2.3 is average).

Weather 2000 pointed out that the recent development of weak La Ni conditions could contribute to a summer environment that looks to be even more conducive for tropical development than was the case last year at this time.

Andy - 06 Mar 2006 17:50 - 5586 of 7811

jimward9,

well I guess with the additional revenue form Ching, we are less dependent of the GOM revenues than we were last year.

I'm not worrying about the weather there, if it happens it happens, SEY seems to have come out more or less ok last year, and if the worst happens, they've probably got some insurance!

Nice .75p rise today, let's hope we are about to break out of the pennant.

proptrade - 06 Mar 2006 17:53 - 5587 of 7811

30p breakout on my estimate...

seawallwalker - 06 Mar 2006 18:37 - 5588 of 7811

That would be nice prop.

I thought it would have gone past 25p by now, but it seems to be butting heads with it!

The higher the better, any bid would reflect the new price accordingly.
