17/1/2006 Pace Micro slumps to loss

UK set-top box maker Pace Micro Technology slid into the red during the first half its fiscal year due to the increasing penetration of digital television.

The group reported a loss before tax and restructuring costs of 8.9m in the first half to December 3rd 2005, compared to a profit of 4.7m a year earlier, as revenue slumped to 78.9m from 150.5m.

Shipments of set-top boxes fell to 1.1 million over the period, from 2.1 million in 2004, a fall that CEO, John Dyson, attributed to the fact that there are simply fewer and fewer homes without some form of digital television.

Digital TV penetration had risen to around 70% in the UK, meaning fewer new customers for Pace Micro, Dyson told reporters in an interview.

There were also unflattering comparisons with the previous year's sales to British Sky Broadcasting Group's Italian unit and to Australia's Foxtel; 2004 was a bumper year for digital take-up in those countries, he explained.

Still, Dyson said he expected a 'substantial' pick-up in business in the second half of the fiscal year, albeit not enough to make up for the weak first half. The CEO said he expects Pace Micro to post a loss of 'one or two million (pounds)' over the full year.

Revenues should improve significantly during the second half through shipments to the US as well as Premiere in Germany, UPC in The Netherlands, Foxtel in Australia and Sky New Zealand.

However, this growth will be offset somewhat as in the UK the group expects units and revenues to continue to decline in the short-term, said the company in its earnings statement.

Lookng further ahead, Pace said it was 'well positioned' for a solid performance in the next financial year due to growing demand for new technologies such as high definition TV, particularly to the US.

Sales of high-definition TVs were already outstripping analogue in the US, and a similar 'explosion' expected in Europe in '18 months to three years', said Dyson.

By the end of the fiscal first half, net cash stood at 13.6m, compared with 26.4m on June 4th 2005. The group also said it has arranged new bank facilities to cover its anticipated working capital requirements as the business builds in the second half.
