Marchpole - Nice New Clothes (MPH)

Socrates - 30 May 2003 18:58

Marchpole is one of those stocks which have had a really bad time. Boardroom battles, losses, price collapse, profit warnings up the ying yang.

Now all of those things seem to be sorted out, new management are getting to grips, new contracts and the price is on the up. So much so that Monday ought to see a 50/200 day MA golden cross.

DYOR of course, but I think I will be putting a few of these away at the open.

rom the Sunday Telegraph

"CLOTHES RETAILERS HAVE WARM OUTLOOK

We have been bearish on most clothing retailers in recent months because of the slowdown in consumer spending that has affected all high street chains.

So we were intrigued by a note last week from Morgan Stanley called Apparel Retail: Surprisingly Attractive. The note said the outlook for British clothing retailers over the next 12 months "may not be as bad as the market expects". The bank said the past year had been so bad for clothing retailers thanks to poor weather and the lack of strong trends that comparative figures for the year ahead would be easy. This could lead to possible "upside surprise" in like-for-like sales over the next six months.

On a broader outlook, the bank's view is that the clothing sector is a very good defensive play. We have never seen it as such. We would, for instance, always advise readers to invest in supermarkets ahead of fashion retailers: should the apocalypse come, food will be more important than clothing.

However, Morgan Stanley has a different view. "We consider there to be as much upside risk as downside risk to near-term earnings," it said. This is all the more "exciting" given how much three of the sector's biggest stocks have been derated. Marks & Spencer, Next and Debenhams shares are down by 13 per cent, 7 per cent and 24 per cent respectively since May.

We think M&S and Associated British Foods Primark's owner are still worth picking up. But we remain sellers of Next."................tesco

i am more than willing to have a bet with you for say 50/100, to be lodged with a stakeholder, on MPH's sp at opening on first trading day of 2008 ....... i say <150 for sure ...... interested?

tesco888 - 17 Oct 2007 16:58 - 641 of 715

No need for bet Cynic, just be prepared to say you were wrong on here and I will do the same. I hope for all holders that I am including myself holding over 60,000 now having added all the way down. Good luck to you and perhaps you made a few bob on the way down shorting from 190 to 1.12, good luck to you if you did.........................................Tesco

cynic - 17 Oct 2007 18:14 - 642 of 715

i am always morew than happy to admit when i cock it up! ...... i never shorted MPH as not really liquid enough and did not feel that strongly about it, unlike NRK

tesco888 - 18 Oct 2007 15:17 - 643 of 715

Must admit to not foreseeing the drop back from 1.90 and still don't, if I could work it out then I could have made more. The only thing is that its a small company and this enables MM to manipulate the price down on low volumn to in my opinion silly levels. Anyway I stick to my analysis that anyone who has paid under 2.00 will make a healthy profit within the next 12 months and hopefully break 1.75 mark by the new year..............................regards.....................tesco

cynic - 31 Oct 2007 08:06 - 644 of 715

and still falling ..... if there was support at +/-105, it was clearly of worn-out elastic!

lex1000 - 31 Oct 2007 11:08 - 645 of 715

Support in old money 19p & 20p converts to 95p & 100p respectively.

Known overhang with seller in the market.Interims due November hopefully numbers transparent and provide clear idea of post YSL era.No position.

cynic - 31 Oct 2007 13:15 - 646 of 715

MPH's past record does not suggest transparency! ...... there will no doubt be certain bullish noises, but little to prove that the BIG YSL hole has indeed been filled, let alone that MPH is (truthfully!) bucking the dire performance in the high street

lex1000 - 31 Oct 2007 14:21 - 647 of 715

YSL accounted for 75% of the old UK dominated MPH.It is fair to say that Michael Morris done a good job transforming into international & global business. Will be down to number crunching come interims.MM is not well liked in the City.Series of silly cock-ups,the last paying dividends illegally.Nothing that an EGM et seq can't put right! I would hope at or near bottom 90p-100p if seller is nearly done. Expect rise leading up to Interims which may or may not be put back by a few weeks. No holdings.

cynic - 31 Oct 2007 14:36 - 648 of 715

i don't hold either, and agree with what you say about MM ..... however, and as posted above several times, he is so arrogant and egocentric that he makes bad errors - e.g. continuing his in(s)ane vendetta against Boateng - and fails utterly to see the importance, and thus look after, his key design staff - thus few stay more than a year or two; again, totally insane!

tesco888 - 13 Nov 2007 21:31 - 649 of 715

cynic the design staff you keep quoting as leaving mph was in fact the designer for womens wear for Ungaro and nothing to do with menswear range connected with mph, as far as Boateng was concerned the company stood its ground and was awarded damages so get the facts straight. Results out Monday when we will all see how the company has performed. ............................Tesco

cynic - 13 Nov 2007 21:39 - 650 of 715

wrong! ...... even had you been right, the real point is that MM has no man-management skills and does not have the sense to recognise that fact by delegating to someone who does ...... as a result, the management shows its incompetence by losing its "seed corn" time after time after time ....... as for Boateng, it was a case of one super-ego having a fight with another to the benefit of neither in the long run, and certainly not the shareholders ...... and the results will be historic and not show what has happened since.

still want to bet on sp reaching 200 within 12 months?

lex1000 - 14 Nov 2007 00:18 - 651 of 715

MPH stupidly cheap against sector average.

Would normally expect share price to rise leading up to Interims announced after close tonight.Interims confirms strong transparent figures MPH more than capable of rise back to 150p+.No holdings.aimvho.

No Cynic I will be happy with you eating your words and publicly stating it on here and if Its not at 2 within 12 months i will do the same..................tesco

cynic - 14 Nov 2007 14:13 - 653 of 715

very happy to do so! .... current figures should be fine, apart from the hole that must assuredly still remain from the loss of YSL ..... i can tell you that the menswear designer to whom i alluded fullfilled his/her word by completing the range before leaving ...... the replacement is said to lack experience shall we say.

though no company (or range) is or should be reliant on one person, it still highlights the incompetence of the management that they lose their design staff on a very regular basis

tesco888 - 14 Nov 2007 22:51 - 654 of 715

Show you know what your talking about What's the designers name" ..................tesco

cynic - 15 Nov 2007 07:31 - 655 of 715

no ..... but then nor do i care very much whether or not you believe me ...... i know i tell the abolute truth and that is all that matters

kitosdad - 16 Nov 2007 17:02 - 656 of 715

Tesco ... be a man and take his bet. It's only 50 quid that YOU WILL LOSE.

tesco888 - 17 Nov 2007 09:10 - 657 of 715

kitosdad, how can I place a bet with a poster who gets all his facts wrong and when put on the line says "i know i tell the absolute truth and that is all that matters"
Again final chance : Whats the designers name or lose all credibility.

cynic - 17 Nov 2007 09:29 - 658 of 715

i am more than happy to lose my credibility with Tesco ...... however, as i have known the designer in question for many many years, and even know the subsequent job that was taken and where, i think there is a very strong likelihood that i know both the sex of this designer and the precise post held at MPH!
