Travelling from the airport at Salt Lake City, Utah, in a shuttle taxi to our hotel nearer to the ski slopes a few years ago, I casually asked the driver, "What is it like living in a Mormon state?"

"Well, it's pretty good," he told me. "They don't shove religion down your throat and I'll tell you what, all the jails are just about empty. You do the slightest thing wrong and you get slapped in jail. That's why the crime rate is so darned low. And, like I say, the jails are empty because of it. Yeah, we hardly get any crime around the place. So I guess we all have to say how the Mormons are pretty good."

Now I guessed becasue of what this guy told me, that in Utah, jail was truly a deterrent, but over here in the UK no punishments for crime are a deterrent. Well, except for motoring offences, which are so much a deterrent that such a lot of people just totally capitulate and cross the line into illegality. They just don't do a drivers licence, road tax or car insurance. I know that just with car insurance we are talking about 5% of all the UK's drivers just not having any.

I reckon the whole of the UK's politicians and the House of Commons and our populace is going to get such a damn great shock on Election Day. I foresee really strange things happening with the results. A more appropriate name for it might be 'Communication Day' as we tell them where to stick it.
