Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

HIGH SCHOOL 1957 vs. 2010

Scenario 1:

Jack goes quail hunting before school and then pulls into the school
parking lot with his shotgun in his truck's gun rack.
1957 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack's shotgun, goes to his car
and gets his shotgun to show Jack.
2010 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and
never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized
students and teachers.

Scenario 2:
Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school.
1957 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up
buddies.
2010 - Police called and SWAT team arrives -- they arrest both Johnny and
Mark. They are both charged them with assault and both expelled even
though Johnny started it.

Scenario 3:
Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students.
1957 - Jeffrey sent to the Principal's office and given a good paddling by
the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt
class again.
2010 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie. He is
then tested for ADD. The family gets extra money (SSI) from the government
because Jeffrey has a disability.

Scenario 4:
Billy breaks a window in his neighbor's car and his Dad gives him a
whipping with his belt.
1957 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college
and becomes a successful businessman.
2010 - Billy's dad is arrested for child abuse. Billy is removed to foster
care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy's sister
that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison.
Billy's mom has an affair with the psychologist.

Scenario 5:
Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school..
1957 - Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock
2010 - The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug
violations. His car is then searched for drugs and weapons.

Scenario 6:
Pedro fails high school English.
1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college.
2010 - Pedro's cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear
nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for
graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state
school system and Pedro's English teacher. English is then banned from
core curriculum. Pedro is given his diploma anyway but ends up mowing
lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

Scenario 7:
Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts
them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed.
1957 - Ants die.
2010 - ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is
charged with domestic terrorism. The FBI investigates his parents -- and
all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are
confiscated. Johnny's dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never
allowed to fly again.

Scenario 8:
Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee He is found
crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.
1957 - In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.
2010 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She
faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.

I've at last realised that Fred is living proof of the theory of multiple coexisting universes. Many odd apparitions in the universe we inhabit are considered by some to be accidental intrusions from one or other of these parallel universes. It's now clear to me that Fred is just such a phenomenon. I feel reassured already.

Also watched the programme. Vince Cable easily outshone the other two. Shame he is just abut the only one of his party that is credible.
We all know (or should) that whoever gets in, we are in for a very rocky time.
I do believe we should cut now, drastically, in all areas of public employment from the top down.
This would mean the effects felt by those that receive these services would be kept to a minimum.
The problem we have is that with now over half (51%) of people employed, work for the public sector, it will be a case of turkeys not voting for Xmas.
That is why no party is being specific as to, how, where and when these cuts are to be effected.
The party that the public sector workers are most likely to vote for is the party that they believe will cut less.

The first cut should be the number of MPs, as we have more members of parliament pro rata to population than any other western country, but again I can't see this happening.

I agree.
Although I disagree with Fred's views about as much as I agree with them, he does not rant and rave. Yes he is in the minority, but it is the minority that often get things moving whereas it is the majority that tend to keep quiet sitting on their hands doing nothing.
As to the Guardian and all newspapers.
Many times I have been in situations where the press have openly exaggerated (LIED). I will give 2 quick examples, exact details will be vague due to time lapse.

1 A recovery dive.

Details given to press...Time incident taken 2 hours. Dept of water 40'. Divers involved 8.

Press release... All details doubled, time, depth and number involved, and this was done whilst I was just out of camera shot.

2 Siege incident....

Details given to press......Time, numbers, given. Weapons, 2 knives about 6" in length. Dog (spaniel) killed by knife. CID to scene about 2 hours into incident.

Press release....Time, numbers again doubled. Knife 12" in length. Dog suddenly changed into an Alsatian (has more impact than a spaniel). CID first on scene.

There are so many more examples I have that convinced me that if they can get away with details they take the figures given and multiply by 2.

I have been at so many incident, reading a press report the next day, thinking, 'was this the same incident'.

So next time you read that, Car skidded for 100 metres turning over 6 times, or man stuck for 10 hrs you can work out the true story yourself.

I appreciate that no one on here believes the press 100% anyway. At least I hope they don't.

It is nice to see some are prepared to let me live a little longer.

I don't see myself as left wing, but do believe in a decent humanitarian society.

I think this produces a less discordant society, less fragmentation and less social disorder (crime).

It may surprise some that I agreed with quite a lot of what Maggie Tat, did during the period of government.

What I did not like, was the brutality with which she was prepared to introduce her policies without concern for much of society.

Her policies help to fragment society and are partially responsible for the them and us society. It also helped to develop or increase the dependant society.

If she had spread her changes over a longer period and had regard to developing work for those who became unemployed it would have become more acceptable. (I.e. evolution, not revolution.)

Also, it is forgotten that she or her policies cause the demise of a lot of our industrial base. It was bound to happen, but not at the speed it occurred.

However, if you look at her latter years, I think she was a disaster.
