required field - 10 May 2010 14:34 - 901 of 6294

Yes....but this is the biggest mistake I've ever made by a mile...could not buy back because of the 30 day rule...except in sipp.....just gutted....

greekman - 10 May 2010 14:37 - 902 of 6294

RF,

I presume you sold re CGT.

After having sold...it went up to 138p...but could not buy back because of the blinkin 30 day cgt rule...but if you take the sp now it would not have mattered...sick....

Time Traveller - 10 May 2010 14:44 - 904 of 6294

Got closed out at 253 on my trailing stop.
Managed to buy back in at 243.6
Rocket propelled or what today ............>

Bought back at 2.04.....never ever met anything like this..in such a short space of time....except ITM and AMS....even GKP pales in the face of this...

How you work out the gain under the 'bed and breakfasting' rule:
"If a disposal of shares is identified with shares acquired within the following 30 days, the gain or loss on disposal is the difference between the net disposal proceeds and the acquisition cost."

As you say, rf, tricky timing to avoid that.

Time Traveller - 10 May 2010 14:53 - 907 of 6294

Harry,
Spread betting is the answer.
You can also hedge if you don't want to sell the real thing.
Why not sell your shares and take out an equivalent spreadbet and hold that for 30 days or more. Then switch out into real shares again.

Proselenes - 10 May 2010 15:00 - 908 of 6294

TT, a spike and drop like that :

Knocks out trailing stops.
Encourages some shorters to sell
Panics weak holders into selling with the fall afterwards.
Encourages long position day traders to take profits.

All for the purpose of loosening up stock to fill buy orders.

HARRYCAT - 10 May 2010 15:01 - 909 of 6294

True TT, but I am personally not happy trading on margin. Things could go badly wrong & I am just about clear of debt now & not looking to change that! But it does work for many. CFD's look a tad safer, but....................

Those trading in and out not within a sipp or spread bets must be careful....imagine paying 18% between say 120p up to 180p and you haven't got the stock...ouch !....for traders it's different...

TheFrenchConnection - 10 May 2010 15:16 - 913 of 6294

All you who say you have never seen anything like it before were obviosly not around in the hi tec daze when it was not uncommon for stocks to leap up by 1000p/2000p - yes 10 - 20 in a morning ...eg Balt Tec,,,kwl systems ..........Goldfinger will rememeber as he is about the only name i still recall from those days who still posts -the rest retired i think :-)) ..................but this is still cool .....banked about 35k from DES in 2 days who have done absolutely NOTHING except jump up on the back of this find ...............sentiment ? dont you all love it ,,,,.

I reached retirement age 65 last month and was waiting for my commuted Lump Sum from the final salary pension scheme i belonged to and the money only reached me today!--i had tipped these shares to an old friend of mine who bght 10,000 for his SIIP pension fund a few weeks ago at --yes--39p !!!--he was over the moon today and couldn't believe his eyes when he saw the shares leap up again after thursday and fridays performance!!--he asked me whether i had bght when i tipped them to him and i had to say --NO--because i was waiting for my Lump Sum to come through!!--i was going to buy 10,000 's worth of shares at around 40p but was unable to then but it is now obviously too late!!--as they say--having cash at the right time is imperative to taking advantage of shares when they are oversold which RKH certainly were when they hit @40p a few weeks ago !!-ah well--on to the next one --any ideas anyone!!-

aldwickk - 10 May 2010 15:29 - 918 of 6294
