THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

Maggie Thatcher left in 1990. The conversion of polytechnics was done under John Major. The polytechnics being converted to universities is not a big deal. They had been awarding degrees since 1965 including Masters degrees and research degrees such as PhD.

Spanish newspaper El Pais reported that French president Nicolas Sarkozy had threatened to leave the euro in a recent meeting.

Maybe I was wrong to think that the Euro will last a few years.

Haystack - 14 May 2010 16:16 - 9190 of 81564

Maybe we will have the French euro, the italian Euro etc. We used to have the Swiss Franc, the French Franc, the Belgium Franc.

hilary - 14 May 2010 16:26 - 9191 of 81564

I believe polytechnics being converted to universities was a big deal. Polytechnics were always for educationally sub-standard thickos, regardless of whether they offered a degree or not. In addition, their degrees were invariably for waste-of-space subjects like Home Economics. Anyone who wanted to learn to cook could've got a job in a restaurant.

:o)

We've still got a Swiss Franc by the way.

It appears that Wisteria is running away from Parliamentary Reform,

Reform of the House of House of Lords and providing the smoke screen with democratic process of dissolving parliament.

The Lib/Dem have sold themselves to the lowest of bidders.

Even some tory MPs are objecting.

I was told the Pound would strengthen and market go up.

What is happening?

aldwickk - 14 May 2010 18:13 - 9195 of 81564

If there is no CGT on spread bet's because its classed as gambling, why don't they make profits made on AIM shares tax free and just increase it for the main market ?

Fred1new - 14 May 2010 18:18 - 9196 of 81564

The companies would all stay on AIM.

Directors would start trading them.

Tax implications would have to be changed for bonuses etc.

Nice try.

aldwickk - 14 May 2010 18:48 - 9197 of 81564

Why would they want to stay on AIM just because of no CGT ? the avantage of being on the main market would be better. You could always restrict the size of companys on AIM.

And the other points could be overcome by tax changes. And it would help small companys to get more investers.

Fred1new - 14 May 2010 18:57 - 9198 of 81564

Then you are bringing more rules in.

Can't see the changes acceptable to even George Osborne,

I am surprised that they haven't had a go at Traders using Bets, based on overall income in the year.

Could see it happening in the next some years.

if they do fred, you may be able to offset your trading losses

Down To The Wire: Students To Study US Show
2:36pm UK, Sunday May 16, 2010
Kat Higgins, Sky News Online

Television viewing is moving from the sofa to the classroom as students at a British university are offered the chance to study the US drama The Wire.

The University of York has revealed it will offer a 10-week module in the cop show as part of its sociology degree.

The HBO series, which is set in Baltimore and follows the fortunes of drug dealers and police officers, has attracted a host of dedicated followers, including Barack Obama.

But now final year students will examine issues like race, class, political process and the city in the module entitled: "The Wire as Social Science Fiction?"

Professor Roger Burrows, head of sociology at the university, said: "We look at The Wire as a form of entertainment that does the job some of the social sciences have been failing to do.

"It's a contrast to dry, dull, hugely expensive studies that people carry out on the same issues."

He hopes the new course will challenge the traditional methods of teaching social science.

He added: "It's easier to get students to use The Wire as a way of looking at the current political system than it is to get them to read a dull book on it."

In a homework assignment their peers may envy, the students are expected to watch all 60 of the one-hour episodes before the course starts in the Autumn.

The programme is already the focus of a course at Harvard University in the US and a conference on it was held in Leeds in November.

But some will see the university's decision as another example of "dumbing down" in higher education.

There has been previous criticism of other unusual courses offered in the UK which include golf management, surfing science and pop music performance.

Well, it may be discriminatory.

Fred1new - 16 May 2010 19:53 - 9205 of 81564

I think it would reasonable to have a valuation of general media presentation and the "subliminal" suggestions, within it.

Similar evaluations, have been carried out in the past and show "distortions" in "values" of the suggestible individuals.

I have found it interesting, to record and evaluate BBs postings, on threads such as this one.

Examination, of BBs such as this one and similar are now part of Media Studies, Psychology and Sociology courses.

Very revealing on the underlying or covert usage for manipulation of opinions

What's it like on those Olympian heights you sit your self on?

Cold and lonely?
