THE TALK TO YOURSELF THREAD. (NOWT)

goldfinger - 09 Jun 2005 12:25

Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).

Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.

cheers GF.

TIM

The bed you describe, may be a bed of contagion, but I thought from the tory bleating, the contagion was left by the labour government.

Perhaps. Osborne is getting his excuses in before introduces his mistaken policies.

But your description does remind me of the mores, rituals and values of described by some, as Etonian.

=============

Kayak and NM,

I have been interested in watching people and trying to understand their motivations, responses and actions for a very long time. (Since school days.) I find it fascinating trying to understand the political development and social development of a society.

=======

For me, this is a repeat of an interesting quote.

Civilization (which is part of the circle of his imaginings) has spread a veneer over the surface of the soft-shelled animal known as man. It is a very thin veneer; but so wonderfully is man constituted that he squirms on his bit of achievement and believes he is garbed in armour-plate.

==============

What has interested me is, how a small group of individuals are prepared to unite in anonymity and seem to enjoy trying to denigrate. or abuse others, who have the audacity to hold different views.

Not arguing against the points, but intent on the destruction of anybody who appears different or hold different views to themselves.

At the weekend, I discussed the above with a friend, who told me that this type of discussion is appearing more and more the approach of undergraduates on the internet and general discussions. He like many of his colleagues found it saddening,

We reflected, that in the papers some years ago there were frequent reports of Internet bullying and humiliations of young school children, by their peers, which was argued to have instigated suicides in some of the those children.

We questioned who were the bullies were trying to emulate, and amongst other likelihoods , thought that the children were probably emulating their parents values, or what they picked up from the media.

To me it is sad that such a vehicle for possible mutual advance is abused.

===================

But it is interesting.

But it is not simply that you are observing. You are baiting people with conflagratory posts. If you're trying to study the system, it is unlikely that you will get any meaningful data by becoming involved yourself.

Then you post that you are being got at. That is hardly surprising. Honestly held views would not be a problem here, this is a pretty civilised place. Many of your posts read as though they are either written by someone incredibly thick, or someone who is out to annoy as many people as possible. If we're talking about respect for others' views, your posts certainly don't have that. Personally I don't think you're thick.

Kayak,

If you go back you will find that I have not been abusive to anybody, other than those who have attempted to be abusive, or defining of me, based on little actual knowledge of me.

When, that has been done, I feel no need not to respond in the same manner.

I have a strong dislike of bullying of anyone.

Intellectual provocation, is a useful form of debate and opening a "question" to evaluation.

Ideas develop, and hopefully, views can change.

Respect, has to be earned, not expected, or by pontification!

========

NMh

Agree with the majority of what you have written.

==========

In her early days, one of one of my daughters Post P.hd. research projects, was on "Media Abuse" and the effects of TV and films on culture.

I found it fascinating, at the time, and became interested in its "intentions" or "uses".

The posting, which I made on another thread was informative, on how the media is abused in international politics.

=======

Again, if you don't challenge, the abuses will continue.

You might like to try the Norwegian Weather web site at

http://www.yr.no/english/1.2025949

Tip: For a really good weather forecast, click on the link and simply enter the place name you require into the SEARCH facility.

As well as such things as snow depths and pollen counts, this site even does the weather for Oil Rigs.

For the person who has everything!

Rowan Atkinson's Blackadder codpiece could fetch 1,000

A codpiece worn by Rowan Atkinson in the 1986 TV series Blackadder, set in medieval times, is being auctioned in Berkshire.

The codpiece was a covering at the front of the crotch and formed an essential part of the well-dressed Elizabethan man's wardrobe.

It accentuated the genital area and was held closed by string ties or buttons.

The garment is expected to sell for 1,000 at the TV and Film Costumes auction at Cameo in Midgham on Sunday.

Jon King, from Cameo, said: "This is possibly the most iconic costume item in the series.

"There is a lot of interest world-wide in this auction, as we are live on the computer as well as selling in the room."

BBQ RULES
We are about to enter the BBQ season. Therefore it is important to refresh your memory on the etiquette of this sublime outdoor cooking activity .
When a man volunteers to do the BBQ the following chain of events are put into motion:

Routine...
(1) The woman buys the food.
(2) The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables, and makes dessert.
(3) The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man who is lounging

beside the grill - cold drink in hand.
(4) The woman remains outside the compulsory three yard exclusion zone

where the exuberance of testosterone and other manly bonding activities can

take place without the interference of the woman.

Here comes the important part:
(5) THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL.

More routine...
(6) The woman goes inside to organize the plates and cutlery.
(7) The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is looking great.

He thanks her and asks if she will bring another cold drink while he flips the meat

Important again:
(8) THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND

HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN.
More routine...
(9) The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils,

napkins, sauces, and brings them to the table.

(10) After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes.

And most important of all:
(11) Everyone PRAISES the MAN and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts.

(12) The man asks the woman how she enjoyed her night off cooking .

Haystack - 27 May 2010 22:36 - 9230 of 81564

It is, of course, essential that any sons of the MAN are able to witness this ritual so that they may continue it when they are the MAN. It is equally important that daughters of the woman gain a clear understanding of the respective roles involved in the BBQ ceremony.

greekman - 28 May 2010 07:42 - 9231 of 81564

This-is-me,

As an avid BBQ real man, I tried not to recognise myself from your post, BUT failed in every area.
The only thing that was missing, was the continuing question/statement from the woman, "I'm sure there burning, or/and Have you turned them over yet".

If she continues to treat me like a brain dead Neanderthal, I'll drag her back to the cave!

Haystack,

Well said.

Fred1new - 28 May 2010 08:50 - 9232 of 81564

Greek,

It takes a woman to understand a man's needs.

greekman - 28 May 2010 09:22 - 9233 of 81564

Fred,

I know plenty of women who understand my needs, problem is my wife (who I love dearly) isn't one of them.
