just as a thought ...... i guess it's possible that there is an intrinsic and underlying demand for stock and sp is merely being marked down in an attempt to force some sales (stopped out) ...... however, if there are 3/4 MMs, that is probably unlikely as too difficult to coordinate between them (and illegal!)

Strawbs - 08 Jun 2006 12:54 - 702 of 2511

Queen,

You probably need level 2 access to understand, but I'll try and explain (as far as I understand it). Firstly you have the market makers, they must buy or sell, and they can dictate the price. Then you have the order book, where others offer to buy or sell blocks of stock, but they can withdraw those orders before they are dealt if they want to. You see the best buy and sell orders on level 1, irrespective of where they come from. Remember that market makers must buy or sell, but they generally only deal is certain sizes, so as each size block is filled, they switch from being a buyer to a seller, or vice versa. They will either be buying at a higher price (rising share) or a lower price (falling share).

Today the order book filled up on the sell side with orders (presumably because someone was desperate to get rid of some large blocks of stock). Each time a sell happend, the market makers (who where supporting the bid), where coming back with lower bids as each of their blocks were filled. The price stabalised when orders where put in on the buy side, so that the market makers where no longer buying and supporting the price.

In affect. People are buying from someone who is desperate to sell, rather than from the market makers. Of course if someone was desperate to buy, the price would go the other way.

Hope that makes sense.

With the market in such a "correction" phase is the share price likely to take off even if the news we await is very good. I have seen the valuations posted and even taking conservative estimates of say, 10 a share in the next few years I would have thought that VOG's share price should have held up better.

Strawbs - 08 Jun 2006 13:11 - 704 of 2511

Another way to look at it is this. You could buy from the shop (market makers), which means there are fewer left in the shop, or you could buy from me. This still looks like a "buy", but it doesn't affect the levels of stock that the shop holds, because one owner has been changed for another. If the shop decides it want's to sell it's stock for less, then the price will fall, even though it looks like there are hundreds of buyers around.

Strawbs.

Strawbs - 08 Jun 2006 13:18 - 705 of 2511

Impossible to say where the price will go. I suspect there are lots of other mechanics at work here, rather than just a degree of negative sentiment. If I had to make a best guess, I'd say a good RNS on a good day will see the price rise, but if people have bought in to support losses elsewhere, then the rise could be short lived.

cynic - 08 Jun 2006 13:19 - 706 of 2511

majormoney ...... i don't know where you get 10 as a conservative estimate of value over the next few years, but sounds more than a little wishful ...... However, I do know that Ambrian's fair value was 330 based on NAV of 512 and then stripping out the Khaz risk factor

scotinvestor - 08 Jun 2006 13:22 - 707 of 2511

this is still going down.................150p at least but i think 130p. am i the only one here to see sense

cynic - 08 Jun 2006 13:32 - 708 of 2511

scot ...... 130 on the basis of what? ..... and if 130, why not just 30?

lizard - 08 Jun 2006 13:58 - 709 of 2511

well if he is that confident he should just short it!.

cynic - 08 Jun 2006 13:59 - 710 of 2511

perhaps he has

soul traders - 08 Jun 2006 14:28 - 711 of 2511

Cynic, I don't think a valuation of 1.2 billion for VOG or so is out of the question, which is what you get for your 10 a share. If VOG really does claim reserves of 1.1 billion boe - and we wait with bated breath for results of ongoing appraisal explorations - then 10 would be cheap; we'd surely be talking Cairn Energy territory, more or less.

Assuming energy prices hold up, then why not? FYI I do my sums with $50 oil to be a little on the safe side.

WDIK, PDYOR. Counter-arguments welcome, etc.

soul traders - 08 Jun 2006 14:31 - 712 of 2511

PS - 30p a share would be great - we could all bet our mortgages/pensions/grandmothers' hip replacement funds on this stock and wait for VOG to do a Cairn Energy. Then I could buy myself a chateau in France on the proceeds.

Isn't it Buffett who prays for the stocks he holds to plummet so he can buy more??

silvermede - 08 Jun 2006 15:16 - 713 of 2511

ST, Yep if you really believe, after having DYOR, that a particular share has significant Value and its' price falls due to general market conditions then why change that initial view, Patience will pay off in the long run and you can top up on the way if have sufficient funds, which is where the experienced investor will win and have budgeted for such conditions. However, if the SP is all wind and blag it is unlikely to recover except on news which adds significant value. This last month has been really interesting to see which shares move up, down or stay put as means of sifting out those that have real value already being realised and those that could potentially be big. The trick as I'm sure you are well aware is having a balanced portfolio that can absorb the higher risk rollercoaster ride. Happy hunting! :-)

silvermede - 08 Jun 2006 15:28 - 714 of 2511

the 200 Day Moving Average is 149 at present, so maybe that will be the test???

majormoney - 08 Jun 2006 22:13 - 715 of 2511

Cynic. Yes possibly a little wishful but have a look on ADVFN BB's for some valuations of company. Also the Chairman is on record stating that he is looking to make the company's market cap half a billion before the end of 2006. Also at the EGM the Management were very positive on all aspects of their drilling programme and that they were actively assessing several other opportunities both in FSU and other places. We were left in no doubt that they are on their "home ground" and are very confident in what they are doing. If you haven't already checked them have a look at their biographies as they should offer a little comfort. We were told that their drilling team are second to none and that D&M always err on the side of caution. Personally I am a little surprised that the price has fallen away quite as much as it has but that is almost certainly due to the in and out brigade (absolutely no offence meant here to anyone as I wish I was clever and rich enough to be one) and hopefully with good/great news the price will settle down much higher. There are a few companies out there that are and will flatter to deceive but I think VOG is the real deal.

cynic - 09 Jun 2006 07:54 - 716 of 2511

have been watching pre-opening prices and though they are often unreliable in the extrme, when i logged on 20 mintes ago, VOG were +5 and have since ticked to +11 and now +20 ...... lets hope there is a decent ands sustained recovery ..... imo VOG was unfaily hammered though that of course applies to many shares

queen - 09 Jun 2006 11:50 - 717 of 2511

Don't speak too soon cynic, only up 8.5 now :-s

I cant remember posting before, but I feel motivated to write.

I've been pretty sick these last few months watching the share price go counter to expectations. It's not entirely tracking the market, there's disappointment in there and delays from VOG.

I gave George Donne a call this morning and let him know how badly pi's are feeling. I don't want to recount everything I discussed (one point in particular I promised not to) but basically he said everything is on track, with the proviso that VOG is a smaller exploration company that cant spud wells and prove up resources at breakneck speed. Nothin is a given until it is proven.

Regarding announcements of 104-bis and 106 he acknowledged that they will be made in June and VOG cannot afford to let us down in this respect.

103 core sample analyses will be available in August.

Regardign Kemerkol, there is more work to do but it is on schedule. No worries there.

Asset acquisition is on the agenda. Assets in the FSU are available and can be bought at good discount to NAV. I like the sound of that, seems to me they have a target or two.

Most importantly of all, he promised to take to the board my report of bad feeling from pi's and that we needed better news delivery. He reminded me that they too are shareholders and hurting.

I felt uncomfortable putting him through the inquisition but I did feel he was listening seriously.

I also feel we can very soon look forward to better prices.

Bless you all and have a good weekend!

dthomson014 - 10 Jun 2006 14:56 - 719 of 2511

f you look at the IEC 2 year chart, you will see that these early stage oilers are prone to significant price weakness whilst there is a lull in news flow and doubts creep in.

IEC virtually halved in early 2005, from near 600p down to 300p, before picking up again and motoring right up to 1000p+.

Oh ye of little faith. The gas is there in West Med. The gas will flow. The price will rise like a phoenix.

We will be richly rewarded for hanging on in here.

dthomson014 - 10 Jun 2006 14:58 - 720 of 2511

the fraccing didn't do iec any harm, or the placing and vog ceo is on record as saying $billion co by year end and I think we can all see he has never had to attend rampers anonymous. The signs are there imo.
