Thought Id start this one going because its rather dead on this board at the moment and I suppose all my usual muckers are either at the Stella tennis event watching Dim Tim (lose again) or at Henly Regatta eating cucumber sandwiches (they wish,...NOT).
Anyway please feel free to just talk to yourself blast away and let it go on any company or subject you wish. Just wish Id thought of this one before.
cheers GF.

Having to report to your "children" what you do as a "day's work", or for a living and its value to society can be very salutary.
Everybody has good in them, but sometimes they it very hard to find where they have hidden it!

"Perhaps modern society has created a situation whereby humans are TOO sophisticated (in the complex sense of that word), for their own good and that reverting to fundamentals might be called for."
A most wholeheartedly agree.
Taken from a consultation dreaft for my area....
Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue
The County Council has a statutory duty to ensure efficient and effective fire and rescue provision and that the service contributes effectively to the wider community safety agenda. New developments place additional demand for fire and rescue resources and therefore the County Council have developed a clear and transparent basis for seeking to mitigate this impact.
Contributions are based on an activity factor i.e. the percentage of time spent on a particular activity. 49% of fires attended by the service are residential with the remainder occurring in non-residential developments. The County Council will produce a capital programme to show where the money will be expended.
The main capital cost is to provide sufficient fire station capacity. There are currently 22 fire stations in Northamptonshire, each covering on average 12,476 dwellings. In order to maintain the current level of service, for each additional 12,476 dwellings, an additional fire station, fully equipped, is required.
The contribution towards new station facilities from residential development will be calculated as follows:
(FS+FA x AF)/DP
Where;
FS is the cost to build a new fire station
FA is the cost of new fire appliances and equipment
AF is the activity factor
DP is the average number of domestic properties.
Currently the 22 fire stations cover 18,887 non-domestic premises. This means that each station on average covers 858 premises. The average property floorspace is 968 sq m. The per sq m contribution is therefore calculated as follows:
(FS+FA X AF) /NDP/PF
Where;
FS is the cost to build a new fire station
FA is the cost of new fire appliances and equipment
AF is the activity factor
NDP is the average number of non-domestic properties
PF is the average property floorspace.
The above stuff has been sent to me for my comment.
Hmmm? Well, before I go any further, that does look like two very sensible formulae.
Q. "Are the assumptions right or wrong?"
A. "I haven't got a clue."
So I can't comment, can I?
Conclusion: It's definitely a case of the blind are leading the blind.

Fred household:
What do you do, Dad?
I wind people up on bulletin boards.
Why, Dad?
Dunno, I just have fun doing it.
But how can you justify that, Dad?

Easy, daughters. I am just trying to expand their capacity to think logically and less egocentrically.
"But Dad, there are many who won't be able to do that"!
Dad, "But there are some who will be able to think, and not just react as if they are programmed.
They will enjoy questioning their own positions, and some will have the flexibility to modify their stances, or argue and validate the positions which they hold.
Sometimes, when they concentrate on the subject under discussion the responses are interesting and very sensible and informative.
But, sometimes the response are a bit infantile and meaningless utterances and grunts."
Daughter, "you mean like the Junior School's playground, where they call each other names and want to fight and bully others, who they see as different."
Daughter, "I like discussing different things and sometimes it can be fun!"
"Me too daughter, I am glad we agree on something."
Next question?

NM,
I am half way with you.
And words such as "absolutely" and the others I can't recall, should all be struck out of the dictionary.
I have a daughter who has lost he way, and after having degrees in Psychology, Linguistics and , multiple qualifications in language has gone back to university to study "linguistic pathology".
I think, I am partially responsible for her pathology, by encouraging her not to take statements as facts, and to ask the question "Why?".
Unfortunately, for me, her sisters have are similarly inclined and at times their mother can be equally challenging.
Thankfully, they also have a sense of humour.
