Tesco (TSCO)

dai oldenrich - 01 May 2007 16:26

Tesco is one of the worlds leading international retailers. Since the company first the trading name of Tesco, in the mid 1920s, the group has expanded into different formats, different markets and different sectors. The UKs leading retailer Tesco was floated on the stock exchange in 1947 and in 1995 took over rival Sainsburys position as the UK number one. The principal activity of the group is food retailing, with over 2,000 stores worldwide. Tesco has a long term strategy for growth, based on four key parts: growth in the Core UK business, to expand by growing internationally, to be as strong in non-food as in food and to follow customers into new retailing services. The company launched a home shopping service in 2000, allowing customers to order their shopping online. Tesco is now expanding its convenience stores and overseas into areas such as Taiwan, Malaysia, Poland, the US and Ireland.

I'm confused by the above

"******* say they will in future only stock UK chicken
Oh really? ........ UK farms can no longer produce sufficient thanks to the supermarkets dumping them many years ago as they could buy cheaper abroad .... so how will ****** supply all these so-called UK chickens?"

Is it ******* or ****** ? :-)

cynic - 30 Mar 2013 15:05 - 842 of 1721

i understand there is one company that is making a song and dance on this issue, but heaven forefend i should level an accusation as to its probity :-)

Balerboy - 31 Mar 2013 22:22 - 843 of 1721

Agree with you whole heartedly, we as a country have very little agriculture left and could not sustain ourselves. Our winter vegetables have suffered great losses this winter, and now the winter cereals have either not been planted or have perrished. Spring cereals which do not perform as well as winter, are struggling with the winter chill and freezing conditions. Our first touch of shortages is nearer than some like to think.,.

cynic - 01 Apr 2013 09:06 - 844 of 1721

BB - i know you have some expertise in this area ..... is it not also true that plants are remarkably resilient and, with a bit of clement weather, catch up surprisingly quickly? .... last year, i recollect that the winter through april was exceptionally dry, which would also assuredly have caused major problems .... do you know how badly (if at all) yields were finally affected?

Balerboy - 01 Apr 2013 23:17 - 845 of 1721

Different senario cynic, winter crops were estabished, spring crops such as potatoes sown and got away ok. On the otherhand harvesting them last autumn was almost impossible. The grain ended up shrivelled and light (bushel wieght) and potatoe crops stayed in the ground and are being ploughed in. The dry didn't last long enough tomake a lot of difference, whereas the wet....... different story.,.

Is it time to short TSCO ahead of next weeks results announcement?

skinny - 11 Apr 2013 16:06 - 847 of 1721

Ironically, I'm short @385.15 but still hold in my SIPP.

skin sounds sensible to us depends on how the market reacts if they announce the closure of their US business.
