Centamin Egypt : Worth waiting for... (CEY)

pthwaite - 20 Sep 2004 10:27

CEY is a gold mining company operating in Egypt. It was ordered by the Egyptian Government to stop drilling pending a legal dispute brought against the company by a government minister.

Since then, the whole Government cabinet was replaced a few months ago and the minister now in charge of Mining is believed to be positive on Western investment in the country. CEY are pushing for this minister to allow them to continue drilling ASAP; investers are waiting....patiently.

As soon as the company gets the go-ahead to continue drilling, the share price will move north; CEY has plenty of gold in this mine and it is (apparantly) the case of "raking" it out rather than drilling for it!

Check them out...worthy of a punt.

Egypt presidential election to begin in May

Egypt's first presidential election since an uprising forced Hosni Mubarak to resign will begin in May, the head of the electoral commission has said.

Farouk Sultan told reporters that the first round would be held over two days on 23 and 24 May, while a run-off would take place on 16 June and 17 June.

Final results are expected on 21 June.

Analysis - Economic gloom begins to lift in Egypt

(Reuters) - When Egypt's stock market index climbed this week to its highest level since last July, it was more than a boon to equity investors -- it was a sign that after a year of turmoil, prospects may be improving for the Egyptian economy.

Egypt as other countries has a history of corruption and a lot of this is channeling funds into the oldest established families. Any new broom is going to look at the existing 'arrangements' so see if without getting themselves eliminated funds can be created and diverted in a new way. The investing public knows that the successful political party in Egypt, in this case the 'brotherhood', will also be onto this restructuring. The excellent threads provided by DtG show that the new powerbase has less focus on changing existing 'arrangements' but hoping to create fresh ones. This is a classic move and will cause minimal internal disruption.

Given their complete political dominance, why have the Muslim Brothers and the Nur Party chosen to sit back and decided not to go for the presidency? Some analysts have argued that the Brotherhood's decision not to run for president should be seen in light of its struggle against SCAF. If it were to appear too assertive there might be a backlash from the military and its newfound political power might be lost as a result. According to this view, not fielding a presidential candidate but at the same time insisting on an 'Islamic' one should be seen as a bargaining chip with which the Brothers are trying to placate SCAF fears of a complete Islamist takeover. At the same time, the decision is also designed to reassure Western observers that Egypt is not heading towards a theocracy.
