'Talking of gold, it is thought mining minnow Obtala Resources is in talks over a fresh gold mining licence in Tanzania.

Just before Christmas it disappointed the market by pulling out of another gold prospect there.

It had been short-listed to run the Buck Reef project, where potential resources were
thought to be about 1.5 million ounces.

Just before Christmas and barely two weeks after announcing it had been short-listed, Obtala said it had withdrawn from the project 'to focus on other opportunities'.

But industry sources say the group is holding fresh talks with Tanzania's state mining company over a larger gold prospect where resources are thought to be about 2.5 million ounces.

Shares in Obtala have roughly doubled in the past year and closed on Friday at 43p, valuing the group at 96 million

But sources suggest Obtala may also be close to clinching a licence on a major Tanzanian coal prospect. And with the current price bonanza, it could make coal far more exciting than gold. '
