New Scientist Magazine? (TECH)

Gausie - 23 Jan 2003 02:38

New Scientist magazine has for many years run stories on a wide range of new technologies, examining the scientific aspects to these technologies, and the commercial opportunities that they present.

What catches my eye is that they currently seem to be quite early in reporting innovations by young UK small cap companies - often they get wind of where things are heading before the stockmarket even begins to understand the issues.

This post is not intended as a subscription drive for a magazine - far from it. What I'm interested in finding out is whether any other posters take in industry or academic journals specifically to look for investment ideas.

I'm also keen to discuss some of the new technologies as they are featured in New Scientist or other leading and popular science journals.

Have they done anything on steam pumps?

Gausie - 23 Jan 2003 02:44 - 3 of 32

No. Do you think they should? Do you know something I don't?

Mr Ashley James - 23 Jan 2003 02:46 - 4 of 32

LOL

Gausie, I was very interested in this week's article on bananas. For the benefit those who don't take the NS, there are concerns that commercial bananas will disappear within a decade or so because, being infertile, bananas don't evolve naturally and are a 'sitting duck' for pests and diseases. The implications for food supplies in the developing world are serious. This is a terrific opportunity for a company to develop new varieties before it is too late. One of the best agro/bio opportunities of the decade? Who is involved?

Martini - 23 Jan 2003 09:28 - 6 of 32

O dear the depths some people will sink to ramp a share!

Crocodile - 23 Jan 2003 09:40 - 7 of 32

So subtle ;-)
Nice one Gausie

Lemain - I found the article particularly interesting. What will we do in 20 years time when we want a bunch of bananas?

In the meantime, should we want a bunch of cynics - I know exactly where to come!

Shame on you Kayak, Martini and Croc! We can't possibly know what's in the next issue of New Scientist yet!

But wouldnt it be fabulous if they chose to run a feature on the steam pumping tyechnology being developed by Pursuit Dynamics (Epic: PDX, currently trading on AIM at 37p, widely tipped to hit 1.50 by the end of the year).

Just think of all those innovators reading the magazine and working out what new applications they could put this incredible patented technology to.

Fingers crossed for steam and bananas

Gausie

Scientific America is another one that the biotech analysts like to read too.

James 24 - 23 Jan 2003 14:34 - 10 of 32

What? I thought of them read the beano given some of the recommendations they came out with two-to-three years ago!

terrettp - 23 Jan 2003 14:37 - 11 of 32

I think most of the more discerning ones will have their nose in the National Enquirer...at least to find out which drugs are the most popular selling amongst celebrities....

Gausie - 23 Jan 2003 15:02 - 12 of 32

terrettp - greetings!

Lets not forget that there's plenty more to technology than biotechs!

Kayak made reference to a company earlier who have developed a new means of pumping fluids using steam. This new technology is set to revolutionise industries that rely heavily on pumping - oil & mining, water treatment, food processing, textiles, paper processing to name but a few. He's a smart biscotti, that Kayak.

The pump company have a website here and is quoted on AIM. Take a look, and tell me what you think.

Andy - 23 Jan 2003 16:00 - 13 of 32

Gausie,

When does this edition of the New Scientist that theoretically may contain an article about PDX hit the newstands please ?

kayak,

Please supply more information about the company that has developed this new pump, it sounds interesting!

Andy.

Kayak - 23 Jan 2003 16:26 - 14 of 32

Gausie, would you like to take that question :-)
