I've just added Bollinger Bands to the intraday charts.
These work the same way as for historical charts, except that the
periods are in minutes rather than days.
Comments welcome,
F

Bollinger Bands are a type of envelope developed by John Bollinger. However, where envelopes are plotted at a fixed percentage above and below a moving average, Bollinger Bands are plotted at standard deviation levels above and below a moving average. Usually 2 std deviations above and below a 20 day moving average.
Little woman, they are a fair indication of volatility. The wider the bands, the more volatile the price.
Standard Deviation is a statistical measurement of volatility. It is derived by calculating an x-time period simple moving average of the data item (i.e., the closing price or an indicator); summing the squares of the difference between the data item and its moving average over each of the preceding x-time periods; dividing this sum by x; and then calculating the square root of this result.

I can recommend
GLOMTC's 1 Day Charting course.
Just added Momentum, Rate of Change (ROC), Relative Strength Indicator (RSI) and Moving Average Convergence-Divergence (MACD) to intraday charts.

I've now added trend lines to the streaming charts.
Self explanatory I hope, just drag the mouse over them.
They are red by default but you can change the colour from the
right-click popup menu, which also has options "Clear All" and
"Clear Last".
More chart features coming soon I hope.

Felix,
I love all the new features, especially the pretty colours, but I have a problem getting the basic charts to work, eg:-
Select epic FTO, apply date 29/04/04 - 04/05/04, select "specify" then hit GO,
I get a redraw but where the chart should be I get a little red cross. If I then hit refresh I get a message saying cannot refresh without resend please hit retry, I do this and get the chart, but without data from Tuesday (04/05/04)
I change end date to 05/05/04, hit go etc as above and after retry I get all data including todays up to present moment??
If I pick a pre-defined duration, 1 week, 1 month etc, I get the same result, and have to go through the same sequence to get a display. I am currently using explorer 5.5 so naturally I initially blamed that, but I have now discovered if I select a pre-defined duration of 1 year or above it works first time, any ideas ??

Stormcaller,
I will forward this onto Felix, but in the meantime, with regard to the red cross you see - is this on a streaming chart - If so it may be that you need to download the latest Java plugin from Sun Micro Systems as this may be causing problem.
If you go to the following address you will be able to download it free of charge.

Stormcaller,
Could you just clarify if you're trying to view a historical chart (i.e. one
point plotted per day) or an intraday one?
If you want to view what a stock has done over the last few days, you are
probably best off with e.g. a 4 day or 5 day chart (intraday)
For a longer term view you may be better off with a 1 or 3 month chart
(historical)
Hope this helps,
F

CHAPS,
Sorry for late reply had to make hospital visit.
IanT, Tried your suggestion and acquired download, the only difference it made was to change the result as follows, after hitting GO still get red cross but it now sits in a border the size of the chart border.
With regard to streaming or otherwise, for a five day chart the default appears to be intraday, display is correct but only after refresh/retry previoulsy mentioned. One month chart appears to display end-of-day but only after refresh/retry. This result is consistent for all charts under one year whether default end-of-day, 1 month and above, or intraday, below 1 month.
To clarify what I do:-
Select charts button, enter epic, from duration dropdown select 5 day, hit "GO"
result: small red cross top left of chart window in small square, since java download this is now contained in chart sized border. hit browser refresh, get message unable to refresh without resend use retry, hit retry button and display appears correctly.

Stormcaller,
It sounds as if you are having trouble drawing a 5 day chart for certain
stocks. The 5 day charts are currently static and don't use Java.
I can't reproduce any problem with FTO which you mention above...
Could you let us know which stocks you are having trouble with here?

Felix,
The first 5 I tried, each with the same result, were BT.A, EEN, FTO, VOD, FKI.
I entered the epic then 6 months from the duration dropdown then "GO"
I repeated this exercise using the same epics but selecting 5 days from the duration dropdown. Each suffered the original problem.
All this was done after a powerdown re-boot, no other features were visited before charts.
If it helps I am running explorer 5.5 / windows '98 series 1
connection is via Tiscali broadband.

NOTE: RE IAN T SUGGESTION ABOVE CONCERNING USE OF THE JAVA PLUGIN, THIS KILLS MY ABILITY TO CALL NEWS OR CHART FROM STOCKWATCH SO I HAVE NOW DISABLED IT, STRANGE ?

Stormcaller,
The Java should not affect the ability to pull up charts or news from the stockwatch page - so that is rather odd.
I will pass your feedback on Charts to Felix.
Thanks

This is entirely empirical as I am no expert! However, after downloading plugin and re-booting, I checked charting as previous. Having re-tested and found continuing problem and duly reported back I went to check stockwatchto see how much I had lost, as screen started to load I noticed "java web start" logo in top left of window, as load completed logo disappeared from window, but appeared in windows toolbar bottom of page, right hand end. Included in my stockwatch list were four "N" news indicators, I moved cursor to the first, left clicked, nothing! Tried the others, then re-booted again, went straight into stockwatch got the same sequence of events. Went into java console removed plugin from operating with explorer and re-booted. Went into stockwatch and all worked normally including being able to pick individual news / chart from stockwatch.

Stormcaller,
Do you have any kind of personal firewall installed on your PC? Something like Norton Firewall or Zonealarm?

Yes, I have Norton Internet Security 2004.
I cannot tell if it makes a difference as I installed it before I was using your site.

Stormcaller,
This may be what is causing the strange effects on stockwatch - can you try to access with it disabled and email me to let me know what happens?

IanT,
Don't know if you ever got my e-mail?
However, I continued to pursue this problem in my own fashion, changing various options, turning stuff on & off etc, all with pretty much no effect.
As a final kill-or-cure strategy, downloaded Netscape 7.1 and had a play with that.
End result, full functionality now available. The obvious exception being that the x-axis month or year bold label still overwrites the day or month sub label. Bit poor really, but at least the main functions now work.
