Greggs like-for-like sales surge 27% from lockdown period last year

ALN

Greggs PLC said on Monday its like-for-like sales in company-managed shops grew by 27%, a figure which the firm noted was ‘flattered’ by comparison with restricted trading conditions in the same period of 2021.

In the first 19 weeks of this year, the Newcastle upon Tyne-based bakery chain's total sales increased by 31% to £495 million from £378 million.

Greggs noted that sales in cities and office locations ‘continue to lag’ but transport locations seen a ‘marked increase’.

A total of 49 new shops were opened in the same period, including a number of retail parks and new travel-based units at Birmingham and Liverpool airports.

Greggs now owns a total of 2,224 shops, comprising 1,831 company-managed shops and 393 franchised units.

The company hopes to ‘continue to work to mitigate the impact of cost pressures whilst protecting Greggs' reputation for exceptional value’.

Its expectations for the full-year outcome remains unchanged.

Greggs shares were down 1.3% at 2,142.00 pence each on Monday morning in London.
