DeepVerge PLC on Tuesday announced that Labskin, one of its businesses, has been selected to join a team of experts developing new ways to evaluate radiation exposure in civilians and military personnel.
DeepVerge is a Dublin-based environmental and life science group that develops and applies artificial intelligence technology to analytical instruments for the analysis and identification of bacteria, viruses and toxins.
Labskin, a human skin microbiology services business, has been chosen to participate by the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity, part of the US Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
The three-year project, which will start immediately, is aimed at developing a new biodosimetry standard which could be used to protect military and civilian personnel who work or live close to ionizing radiation sources such as nuclear plants and ammunition.
Labskin's contribution is the creation of a simple non-invasive swab test to collect signatures from the skin surface. The project is worth $810,000 to the company.
Labskin will work alongside a multidisciplinary team of experts, including professors from the University of Columbia in New York, and computer scientists from ARETE Associates, a defence contractor.
‘The inclusion of artificial intelligence and the opportunity to work with ARETE Associates, with their vast experience in complex AI applications, will result in further advances in how AI can be used in conjunction with our skin model at scale,’ said Chief Information Officer Colin O'Sullivan.
DeepVerge shares were trading 6.3% higher at 8.50 pence each in London on Tuesday afternoon.
