Biome Technologies awarded grant to scale up novel biopolymers

ALN

Biome Technologies PLC announced on Wednesday that Innovate UK, the UK's government innovation agency, has awarded it a £282,000 grant to support the scale up of novel compostable biopolymers.

The Southampton-based technology group said the novel biopolymers are used by flexible packaging and coatings industries and is working in collaboration with Thomas Swan & Co Ltd and the University of Nottingham.

The project has a total investment of £474,000 and is expected to last 18 months.

The novel polymers were scaled only from laboratory test-tubes to small kilogram quantities before the Innovate UK grant. The latest funding will allow scaling up to industrial quantities of hundreds of kilograms.

Biome has undertaken research and development work on a range of biodegradable polymers over the last nine years, working with seven universities and around 30 leading scientists and engineers. All resultant polymers are subject to patent protection or application.

Shares in Biome Technologies ended down 1.3% at 75.00 pence in London on Wednesday.
