Anglo American inks desalinated water deal for copper mine in Chile

ALN

Anglo American PLC said on Wednesday it had secured desalinated water supply for its Los Bronces copper mine in Chile.

This desalinated water supply will help the mining group meet almost half of the mine’s water requirements.

The supply comes after the London-based miner signed an agreement with Aguas Pacifico, a Chilean water desalination company. The deal will allow Anglo American to stop drawing fresh water for Los Bronces.

In the first phase, Anglo American said Aguas Pacifico will supply it with desalinated water from a plant that is being built in the Valparaiso region. The water will be transported via pipeline to Anglo American’s Las Tortolas plant from where it will be pumped up to the Los Bronces mine.

Water scarcity prompted Anglo American in September to tighten its production guidance for Chile to between 560,000 and 580,000 tonnes of copper from between 560,000 and 600,000 tonnes. Water scarcity and a change in ore characteristics led to lower throughput at Los Bronces.

Anglo American shares were up 1.5% to 3,186.00 pence in London early on Wednesday. They were up 2.0% at R 657.25 in Johannesburg.
