TOP NEWS: Barclays appoints new chief operating officer from February

ALN

Barclays PLC on Wednesday appointed Alistair Currie as chief operating officer and as chief chief executive officer of Barclays Execution Services, replacing Mark Ashton-Rigby in both roles from February.

Ashton-Rigby will remain with Barclays in a part-time advisory role, Barclays explained.

Incoming COO Currie is the current global head of Consumer Banking & Payments, a role which he will leave.

Currie has 27 years of experience in banking, having previously served as COO of Australia & New Zealand Banking Group Ltd in Australia and worked at HSBC Holdings PLC for 18 years.

Vim Maru, previous group director of Lloyd’s Retail Banking unit, will take on Currie’s current role.

Last week Monday, Barclays said CEO Coimbatore Venkatakrishnan will undergo treatment for non-hodgkin lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects the lymphatic system. In a letter to colleagues, Venkatakrishnan, known as Venkat, had said he will undergo treatment for 12 to 16 weeks in New York, as doctors said his condition is curable with their prescribed regimen.

During this period, he will ‘continue to be actively engaged’ in managing the London-based bank, although he will work from home for some periods and will be unable to travel.

Barclays shares fell 0.8% to 157.42 pence each on Wednesday afternoon in London.
