Ryanair passengers up in July on 2023, but Wizz Air slightly down

ALN

Ryanair Holdings PLC and Wizz Air Holdings PLC on Friday reported contrasting operating results for July, with Ryanair faring better than its rival budget carrier.

Dublin-based Ryanair said it carried 20.2 million passengers last month, up 8.0% from 18.7 million a year before. Its load factor was flat at 96%.

Ryanair said it operated more than 110,500 flights in July, while 651 flights were cancelled due to air traffic control delays.

On a rolling 12-month basis, Ryanair carried 190.4 million passengers, up 8.6% from 175.3 million in the 12 months to July 2023. The load factor for both 12-month periods was 94%.

Budapest-based Wizz Air said it carried 5.9 million passengers in July, down 1.4% from 6.0 million a year before. Its load factor also slipped, to 93.8% from 94.9%.

Capacity was down 0.3%, due to geared turbofan engine-related groundings of A321neo planes, Wizz said. The airline also was hurt by the worldwide IT outage on July 19, which disrupted about 1% of its scheduled flights last month, it said.

However, on a rolling 12-month basis, Wizz carried 68.9 million passengers, up 12% from 61.6 million, at an unchanged 90.0% load factor.

Ryanair shares were down 0.4% to €14.35 in Dublin early Friday. Wizz Air shares were down 1.0% to 1,466.00 pence in London.
