Balfour Beatty secures £363 million National Grid contract

ALN

Balfour Beatty PLC on Friday announced it has won a £363 million contract with National Grid PLC.

The London-based infrastructure construction contractor will deliver the Bramford to Twinstead reinforcement project under a contract with National Grid’s RIIO-2 framework.

This will involve replacing the existing high-voltage electricity network between Bramford Substation in Suffolk and Twinstead Tee in Essex with a new 400 kilovolt overhead line spanning 18 kilometres. A further 11 kilometres of underground cable will be delivered through Dedham Vale and Stour Valley.

The project will reinforce the electricity network in East Anglia, providing clean and green electricity as required for the UK’s transition to net zero. Ecologists and conservationists will be consulted to minimise disruption to local wildlife and to ensure a 10% biodiversity net gain over the project lifecycle.

Construction is expected to begin in the first half of 2025 and finish in 2028.

Chief Executive Officer Leo Quinn said: ‘This award demonstrates the momentum we are capturing in the energy security and transition market. As the largest power transmission provider in the UK, we have a long and proud history of working with National Grid. This latest award will once again enable our expert teams to deploy their proven capability to successfully deliver overhead lines and underground cabling works in complex and challenging landscapes.’

Shares in Balfour Beatty were up 0.5% at 415.50 pence each in London on Friday morning.
