Kenmare Resources says it is monitoring protests near Mozambique mine

ALN

Kenmare Resources on Monday said it is closely monitoring recent protests in Mozambique, including in areas surrounding its Moma mine.

The Mozambique-focused producer of titanium minerals and zircon said it is taking precautionary measures to protect its personnel and facilities.

The company confirmed its senior management has stayed at the site and no employees have been evacuated, contrary to some media reports. There are no reported injuries to date at the mine.

Mozambique has been roiled by upheaval since the presidential elections on October 9. Daniel Chapo, the candidate of the Frelimo party which has ruled since 1975, secured 71% of the vote according to official results. The opposition leader Venancio Mondlane, who is said to have won 20% of the vote, fled abroad and called for protests.

Kenmare said although ‘the majority of protestors have engaged peacefully’, there had been a proportion involved in civil disorder and criminal activity. The company said this included ‘commandeering and damaging vehicles, some of which have subsequently been returned’.

It said there has been no damage to company facilities and operations at the mine have continued as normal.

The company also said that an increased presence from authorities has calmed the situation over the weekend.

‘The company remains committed to maintaining open communication with all stakeholders to support the swift and peaceful resolution of the situation,’ it said.

Shares in Kenmare Resources were down 1.1% to 349.50 pence in London on Monday morning.
