CleanTech Lithium partners with DuPont to test lithium processing tech

ALN

CleanTech Lithium PLC on Thursday said it has partnered with DuPont Water Solutions on the testing of lithium processing technology.

CleanTech Lithium is a Jersey-based lithium exploration company, and DuPont Water Solutions is a subsidiary of US chemical firm DuPont de Nemours Inc.

DuPont has developed a new nanofiltration membrane technology for high lithium recovery, which aims to remove impurities and maximise lithium recovery.

CleanTech will test DuPont’s technology with its direct lithium extraction downstream process, to investigate its potential in replacing the need for thermal evaporation and crystallisation in the production of battery-grade lithium carbonate.

This replacement would result in ‘potentially significant’ capex savings, CleanTech noted.

‘Our collaboration on testing a new NF membrane developed by DuPont for high selectivity in removing impurities while maximising lithium recovery, is in line with CleanTech Lithium’s mission to deliver efficient and sustainable lithium extraction,’ said CleanTech Chief Executive Officer Ignacio Mehech.

‘By leveraging advanced membrane technology, we aim to test if battery-grade lithium carbonate can be produced without the need for thermal evaporation and crystallisation, resulting in potential cost savings and increased efficiency. We look forward to validating this through our upcoming pilot plant downstream operations with our partner Conductive Energy.’

Shares in CleanTech Lithium were up 2.6% at 10.00 pence each in London on Thursday afternoon.
