Santander confirms talks to sell 49% stake in Santander Polska

ALN

Banco Santander SA on Monday confirmed that it is in discussions with Erste Group Bank AG, regarding the potential sale of a 49% stake in Santander Bank Polska SA.

The Madrid-based lender said it was responding to ‘the recent speculation regarding a potential transaction’ concerning its Polish unit.

On April 8, for example, Bloomberg reported that ‘according to people familiar with the matter’ the company was exploring options including a potential sale of its majority stake in Santander Polska.

‘Spain’s biggest bank is working with an adviser to review its 62% stake in [Santander Polska] and has reached out to gauge interest of potential investors,’ Bloomberg said.

On Monday, Santander confirmed that it had ‘received interest from several parties’ and was currently in discussions with Erste Group, a Vienna-headquartered financial services provider, for the potential sale of a 49% stake in the unit.

‘There is no certainty that the discussions will lead to an agreement being reached and, in any event, completion of any transaction would be subject to closing conditions,’ Santander noted.

Santander shares were up 2.4% at 554.00 pence in London on Monday, and up 1.4% at €6.50 each in Madrid.
