PRESS: BT eyeing possible takeover of Openreach customer TalkTalk

ALN

BT Group PLC is exploring a possible takeover of TalkTalk, the Telegraph reported on Tuesday.

The telecommunications firm is mulling a bid for the broadband provider, which is a customer of the Openreach arm. The Telegraph reported that BT is in the ‘early stages’ of exploring an offer.

Struggling TalkTalk last year sealed a refinancing worth £235 million. The Telegraph noted TalkTalk lost 400,000 customers last year.

The Financial Times on Saturday had reported that BT threatened to block TalkTalk from putting new customers on its broadband network amid a row over unpaid bills.

The FT said TalkTalk has ‘missed several monthly payment deadlines’ to supplier Openreach. Late payments varied in size, the FT reported, quoting a ‘person familiar with the matter’.

The FT reported the late payments represented a ‘small’ sum of the total amount due, which is estimated at £60 million per month.

UBS analysts in a note on Tuesday said late payments by TalkTalk to BT are ‘one of several notable risks’ to the FTSE 100 listing’s £1.5 billion annual free cash flow guidance.
