RWS buys intellectual property behind Papercup’s AI dubbing tool

ALN

RWS Holdings PLC on Thursday said it has bought the intellectual property behind Papercup’s artificial intelligence dubbing technology.

The Buckinghamshire, England-based language services provider said the deal is part of its plan to embed AI across its technology stack and ‘accelerate its ability to support clients with multilingual video, voice and content localisation’.

The financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

Papercup’s technology uses voice synthesis with unique AI voices to offer ‘control and quality output comparable to human dubbing’ at a fraction of the cost and time, RWS said.

‘The acquisition of Papercup’s market-leading technology marks our intention to transform all forms of enterprise content, making it easier for businesses to connect to global audiences. RWS is well positioned to take this technology to its client base, given its trusted partnerships with over 80% of the world’s top brands and ability to offer a broader range of content solutions.’ said RWS Chief Executive Officer Ben Faes.

‘Integrating this hybrid AI capability into our own solutions will enable us to capture the demand for scale and quality in this exploding multimedia content space.’

Shares in RWS Holdings were down 2.1% at 90.60 pence in London on Thursday afternoon.
