Goldman Sachs rehires ex-prime minister Rishi Sunak as senior advisor

ALN

Goldman Sachs Group Inc on Tuesday said former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will rejoin the company as a senior advisor.

Back in 2000, Sunak was as an intern at the New York-based investment bank, before working as Goldman Sachs analyst until 2004. Sunak has a BA from Stanford University.

He entered politics in 2015 as the Conservative Member of Parliament for Richmond (Yorks), before climbing the ranks to chancellor of the exchequer and eventually prime minister. He led the UK in the wake of predecessor Liz Truss’s crisis-inducing mini-budget, and ended his term in July 2024, when the Conservatives were voted out of power for the first time in 14 years.

During his time in government, Sunak courted the technology industry, arranging an artificial intelligence safety summit and filming an interview with Tesla Inc’s Elon Musk.

Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon commented on Sunak’s appointment: ‘He will work with leaders across the firm to advise our clients globally on a range of important topics, sharing his unique perspectives and insights on the macroeconomic and geopolitical landscape. He will also spend time with our people around the world, contributing to our culture of ongoing learning and development.’

Sunak remains an MP for Richmond & Northallerton.

Shares in Goldman Sachs were down 0.5% at $707.11 during Tuesday’s pre-market trading in New York. Its stock has risen 53% over the past year.

Back in April, the firm posted a performance boost in the first quarter of 2025, with equities net revenue jumping 27% to $4.19 billion from $3.31 billion on-year.
