Taseko Mines starts environmental regulatory process for Yellowhead

ALN

Taseko Mines Ltd on Tuesday announced the formal start of the environmental assessment process for its Yellowhead Copper Project in Canada.

The Vancouver, Canada-based mining company said the British Columbia Environmental Assessment Office and the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada have filed and accepted its initial project description for Yellowhead.

The Yellowhead project is located in British Columbia’s ThompsonNicola region.

Taseko, which focuses on North American copper assets, said the acceptance formally commences the environmental assessment process for the project. The process, it said, will ensure that Yellowhead ‘meets the robust regulatory requirements while balancing environmental, social, and economic values’.

It also said the project will be subjected to assessment and decision-making through the Indigenous-led Simpcw Process, which is currently in the initial phase. Yellowhead is located in Simpcw First Nation territory, and Taseko said it has ‘worked closely with Simpcw leadership to build a mutually beneficial relationship...and to inform the Yellowhead [initial project description]’ since it acquired the project in 2019.

‘The submission of the initial project description represents a significant milestone for the Yellowhead Project permitting process,’ commented Chief Executive Officer Stuart McDonald. ‘We have already begun to engage stakeholders and will ensure that the development of Yellowhead is in line with environmental and social expectations.

‘Recently, Taseko has hosted a number of well-attended community meetings and we look forward to continued involvement with project stakeholders and government regulators through the environmental permitting process.’

Shares in Taseko were trading 0.6% higher at 240.50 pence in London on Tuesday afternoon.
