Oxford Nanopore Technologies sues MGI Australia for infringing patents

ALN

Oxford Nanopore Technologies PLC on Wednesday said it has started legal action against MGI Australia Pty Ltd in the Federal Court of Australia.

The Oxford, England-based specialist in DNA and RNA sequencing technologies said the legal action is for ‘infringing four of the company’s Australian patents following the announcement of the launch of its ’Cyclone SEQ WT-02’ in Australia’.

MGI Australia is a subsidiary of Shenzen, China-based life science technology firm MGI.

Oxford Nanopore said the decision to start the lawsuit has been ‘carefully considered’ as it aims to protect the intellectual property behind its sensing platform.

‘Throughout this process the primary focus will continue to be on customers, operations and partners. Protecting IP ensures that investments in new technology can be made available to customers and partners,’ the company said.

It said innovation has generated ‘substantial proprietary IP’ which is protected by patents in the US, Europe, Australia and other jurisdictions.

Shares in Oxford Nanopore Technologies were up 0.4% at 217.80 pence in London around midday on Wednesday.
